What’s Your Life Worth? Exodus 30:11-16

• • Have you ever wondered what your life is worth? In dollars and cents? To the world? To God?
  • Today, we’re diving into Exodus 30:11-16, where God sets a ransom price—a reminder that every life belongs to Him. You were created by him and you belong to him
  • Insurance actuaries and government agencies use a measure called the “Value of a Statistical Life” (VSL) to quantify the economic worth of a human life for risk assessment purposes.
  •  In the United States, the VSL typically falls between $10 million and $12 million.
  • actuaries consider factors like age, health, income, and lifestyle, but don’t assign a single “value” to a life. Instead,  calculate payouts on potential future earnings, debts, and dependents’ needs.

• You’re valuable! Don’t think you’re not! God has great value on you. 

• The Bible describes the people of God with a multitude of positive and encouraging titles. We are known as the Children of God, Beloved, Saints, Chosen, and the Elect. We are a Royal Priesthood, a Holy Nation, and a People of His Own Possession. As Heirs of God and Joint-Heirs with Christ, we are the Redeemed, the Righteous, and the Called. We are also described as the Bride of Christ, the Church of God, Fellow Citizens with the Saints, and the Body of Christ. We are the Temple of the Holy Spirit and Vessels of Mercy, Friends of God, Sons and Daughters of the Almighty, Lights of the World, and the Salt of the Earth. The Bible calls us Ambassadors for Christ, Branches of the True Vine, a New Creation, Citizens of Heaven, and Living Stones. We are the Sheep of His Pasture, Witnesses, Soldiers of Christ, Overcomers, Servants of God, Co-Heirs with Christ, a Chosen Generation, Holy Ones, Believers, Peculiar People, Partakers of the Divine Nature, Sons of Light, and the Faithful. We are Kings and Priests, the Apple of His Eye, the Salt of the Covenant, His Workmanship, Holy and Beloved, Disciples, Sons of God by Faith, Conquerors through Him, Brothers and Sisters in Christ, the Chosen Ones, and the Blessed. As Partakers of Christ, Fishers of Men, and the Children of Promise, we are also Vessels of Honor, Branches of the Olive Tree, Kings and Priests unto God, and the Household of God. We are Beloved of the Lord, the Called-Out Ones, the Elect of God, People of Faith, God’s Dwelling Place, God’s Field, God’s Building, and the Household of Faith. We are the Heirs of the Promise, God’s Heritage, Stewards of the Mysteries of God, and the Bride of the Lamb.
• These titles reflect our identity and value as God’s people, chosen and cherished for His purposes and loved deeply by Him. You are worthy to God!
• Our scripture todays foreshadows the ultimate ransom Jesus paid, calling us to reflect on how we live for Him.

1. The Ransom and Its Purpose

•  God requires each Israelite to give a half-shekel as a ransom—a price for their lives.
• Exodus 30:12: “When you take the census of the children of Israel… every man shall give a ransom for himself to the Lord.”
• This payment isn’t about money; it’s about recognizing that life itself belongs to God.
• Money is an interesting thing. We all have it. We all use it. And we do give value to it
• It represents our labor, sweat and work. It matters to us where it goes and how we spend it
• Whatever you make an hour, you give someone that amount, you’re saying ‘here’s my labor’
• Whats interesting, is in this scripture, God demands each Israelite to pay a ransom
• In Hebrew, the word for “ransom” used in Exodus 30:12 is כֹּפֶר (kōfer). This term has a range of meanings that center on the idea of covering, atonement, and redemption:
• Covering or Atonement: The primary meaning of kōfer is “a covering,” especially in the sense of making atonement. It implies a protective action, as though to cover over or shield from wrath or judgment. This sense of covering suggests that the ransom payment symbolically covers the person’s life, securing their standing before God.
• This is an important distinction to remember- atonement/covering COSTS someone something
• Everything COSTS someone something nothing is free. Someone paid for it at some point. 
• Redemption or Substitution: Kōfer also carries the sense of a “redemption price” or “substitute.” By paying this ransom, the individual acknowledges that their life is redeemed or protected through the offering, rather than through their own merit. It reflects the idea of a life being spared through the offering given in its place.
• The object becomes the redemption. Something outside of them redeem them
• Its like this- you don’t pay for a meal, I’ll do the dishes. No. we want the money. 
• Reconciliation and Satisfaction: Kōfer is used in other contexts to indicate satisfaction or reconciliation, essentially making things right between two parties. This reinforces that the ransom acknowledges the need to be reconciled to God and to uphold the sanctity of the relationship.
•  It’s a tangible reminder that we’re dependent on Him. Relationship COSTS something
• The new testament connection is Connection to Christ. From coins to the cross
• 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: “You are not your own… For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 
• Jesus, as our ransom, fulfilled this concept completely. He paid the ultimate price so we could belong to God fully. We no longer pay coins because of the cross
• This ransom is a foreshadowing of Christ’s redemption FOR US. He paid the ultimate price
• Galatians 4:4-5 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
• Ephesians 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.
• 1 Peter 1:18-19 Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.
• Money still has use and value in Church and your relationship with God, but it has NOTHING to do with your redemption, atonement, or right standing with God. You cant pay enough money!
• Christ is your ransom. Christ paid it all for you, so that you wouldn’t have to do it
• The money redeemed the Israelites. It was a substitute. Jesus is our substitute! Jesus paid it ALL
