WEARINESS. WEARY defined as “fatigued; feelings of tiredness especially because of exertion, exhausted in strength endurance, vigor”. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been weary. I have been exhausted in different seasons for different reasons, which I won’t get into on this platform, but I have felt like the prophet Elijah,
But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, “It is enough! Now, LORD, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!” I Kings 19:4
I get weary of fighting evil, but that’s the job of the Christian. I get weary of fighting my flesh, but that’s one of the Christian’s consistent battles. I get weary of obstinate, rebellious and offended people; but that’s the job of a pastor. I get weary of false accusations, but Jesus said we would be hated by all because of Him. We are told, “do not grow weary in doing good, for we will reap a great harvest if we do not give up”.
I have to choose to arise and not give up. I fight my obstinate flesh. I often hear His voice whispering in the midst of adversity when weariness sets in, “If you have run with the footmen and they have wearied you, what will you do when the flood comes?” If I allow weariness to set in when things are going well, I reveal a crack in my armor. I have not been attentive to my Lord and drawing from His strength. I have relied on my own flesh to help and sustain me.
The Word of God expressly states, “Lift up your eyes to the hills!” Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. I will lift up my eyes. I will not focus on the storm, but fix my eyes on Jesus. I will trust and not be afraid. I will deafen my ears to the lies and slander and hear only the precious voice of my Lord. I will bless those who curse and lie about me. Like a good soldier of Christ, I will not give up!
I will remember that He is faithful who promised. He is with me in the fire. He keeps me safe in His arms. My calling is sure. My path is clear. I will not give up or shut up. I will not grow weary in doing my Lord’s will. I have a race to run.
