STRENGTH DEFINED AS “a noun, the state or quality of being physically or mentally strong. the ability to withstand or exert great force, stress, or pressure.” Some people have mental strength and some have a more physical strength. Physical strength will only take you so far, but a person with mental strength can go far in life. Because of my past, I have the ability to endure great stress and pressure. I have overcome a lot of adversity as a child and so I developed strength by a constant persevering spirit.
I don’t quit. YET, even then our own strength, no matter how strong you are and no matter what you have been through, can only take you so far. Eventually, you will putter out and fail if you are relying on your own strength to see you through to victory. Why? Because we are flawed natural humans. David understood this better than most. A mighty warrior. An overcomer and victorious from the time he was a child. King David understood that his own strength was not enough. He needed supernatural strength to draw from, so he proclaimed,
“The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalms 27:1
The LORD was the strength of His life and with that knowledge and power of the Almighty, no power of the enemy could stop him. You may be able to endure a lot of things, but you will never be able to endure the affliction, pain and persecution that comes with the cross of Christ unless He is the strength of your life. You will run away in fear on that day that the enemy taunts you. You will not stand against the raging cultural battle. You will slip into the throng going down the broad path to destruction.
The road to eternal life is narrow. In Scripture, Jesus was not saying it’s narrow because He is the only way to salvation. While that’s true, He was saying that the “narrow path” is the path of affliction. You will be tried, tested, squeezed, afflicted and persecuted on the narrow path. You will never endure without a heart of perseverance and the Lord’s strength.
Is Jesus your LORD? Let Him fight this battle. Do your part and let Him do His. Run to His throne. Draw from HIS strength and there will be no enemy you cannot defeat and no battle that you cannot win.
