THE BITTER AND CYNICAL LANGUAGE OF UNBELIEF, “The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts. His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and oppression; Under his tongue is trouble and iniquity.” Psalms 10:4, 7
A person can be recognized by his words and an uncontrolled tongue displays a man who is living in self-deception and one who’s religion is worthless. Not my words- the words of Scripture, “If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.” James 1:26
You are deceiving yourself if you think God doesn’t care what/how/why you say something. Jesus tells us that we will give an account of every idle word. Whoa. This is serious business. Just as we are to keep our flesh in subjection, we are to guard our mouths. I knew a pastor who thought it was “cool” to go around cussing because he was proving that he was “under grace”. Self-deceiving, worthless religion. I’m going out on a limb here, but most professing Christians do not control their tongues. They destroy others through gossip and slander. They display their offenses all over social media. They sneak into the lives of the church and whisper discord. They speak doubt and disbelief, “Did God really say?” And are akin to rebellious wilderness Israelites, “Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?”
An unbridled tongue: curses, speaks deceitfully, causes division and dissension, spreads lies and gossip, speaks doubt and disbelief, leads others into falsehood, and the like. An unbridled tongue slyly inserts their offenses naturally into the conversation, as if they are concerned. But their objective is to divide. Their religion is worthless. There is no shortcut to spirituality. You will not gain control of your tongue through a charismatic experience. There’s no magical verse that will suddenly transform your character unless you OBEY IT. “Prove yourselves doers of the Word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves”.
Your words reflect the condition of your heart, “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” Thus, the words coming out of us are not a seed problem, but a soil problem. An unbridled tongue reveals you never protected your seed. Maybe you endured for a time, but you’ve let weeds and thorns grow and choke out your crop. You let bitterness take root and it has defiled you. Listen up brethren, pay close attention to what comes out of your mouth and out of the mouths of others. Your words will tell on your wicked heart. Do not deceive yourself.
