Title: When Jesus Shows UP READ John 20:1-18
- Mary Magdalene finds the tomb empty and tells Peter and John. They see the grave clothes but don’t fully understand. Mary stays behind, weeping, and sees two angels. Then Jesus appears to her, calls her by name, and reveals Himself. She becomes the first to witness the resurrection and runs to tell the disciples.
- This story is the story of everyone. This is a Christian planet and world. Changed by the risen JC
- There are moments in life when someone walks into the room—and everything changes. A parent steps into chaos, and suddenly there’s order. A coach enters the locker room, and the team believes again. A leader shows up in crisis, and people breathe easier. A bride walks down the aisle, and the groom forgets everything else. A soldier comes home from deployment, and the whole house erupts. One presence can shift the atmosphere. One arrival can redefine reality. And if one person can do that—imagine what happens when Jesus walks in.
- When Jesus walked in after the Resurrection Changed the World:
- The calendar: It’s 2025 because of Jesus. No resurrection, no reason to mark His birth.
- Global faith: Over 2 billion people follow Jesus—what else explains that from a crucified man?
- Literacy & education: The church spread reading, built schools, and preserved texts to spread the Gospel. Missionaries turned verbal into written to share the gospel
- Hospitals & compassion: Christians pioneered care for the sick, elderly, and poor out of resurrection love. This isn’t a roman invention- it was the early church.
- Human value: elevated the worth of women, children, and the marginalized. (rome didn’t)
- Legal systems: Western ideas of justice and equality trace back to a resurrected Savior.
- Holidays & rhythms: Christmas and Easter dominate global calendars—even in secular nations.
- When Jesus shows up
- 1. When Jesus shows up- He calms your fear
John 20:19 – “…for fear of the Jews…” (The disciples. Were fearful after crucifixion) - We all have fears. Some are innate- fear of falling, loud noises, loss of caregiver.
- Most are learned over time- Fear of death, failure, rejection, the unknown, pain or suffering, being alone, loss, public speaking, losing control, meaninglessness.
- The Disciples probably had some of these- death, unknown, pain, being alone, meaninglessness
- we all have fears. the question is always- what do we do with them? we have to deal with it
- Alcohol – 63% of U.S. adults drink; 1 in 4 binge drink weekly (CDC)
Drugs – 48 m Americans used illicit drugs last year; 70% of drug deaths involve opioids (NIH)
Scrip meds – 1 in 6 adults take psychiatric drugs; antidepressant use is up 60% in 15 years (CDC)
Porn – 60% of men and 30% of women view porn weekly (Barna)
Guns – 4 in 10 households own a gun; sales spike during fear-driven events (Pew)
Ent. – Americans average 4 hours/day watching TV and 2.5 hours/day on social media (BLS) - Fear increases heart rate, disrupts breathing, tenses muscles, suppresses digestion, weakens immunity, hijacks focus, and throws your hormones out of balance—your body literally prepares to survive, not thrive. If you don’t deal with it- it will have far reaching ramifications.
- Jesus knows the disciples have fear- that’s why he’s there! To assuage their fear- calm
- They’ve been through it. He’s there to calm them. Help them. He’s always done this.
- Remember when Jesus calmed the storm and then appeared to the disciples?
- Mark 4:40 – Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?
- Jesus calmed the storm, but then confronted their fear. The issue wasn’t outside the boat—it was inside their hearts. the storm around you isn’t the problem—it’s the storm inside you.
- Fear exposed lack of faith. had the Savior with them, but still panicked—they didn’t yet trust His presence over the problem. You can have Jesus in your boat and still forget who’s in charge
- But now in John 20, Jesus doesn’t just ride out the storm—He walks straight through the door.
This time, He doesn’t speak to the wind and waves—He speaks to their fear.
This time, He doesn’t question their faith—He declares His peace. - Because when Jesus walks in, fear walks out. Faith in Jesus overcomes fear and doubt.
- Can we believe the scriptures? Isaiah 41:10 – Fear not, for I am with you…Psalm 27:1 – The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? 2 Timothy 1:7 – God has not given us a spirit of fear… John 14:27 –let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Romans 8:15 – You did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear…
- Do you have fear? Appropriate this resurrection power- Jesus wants to walk into your life
- Psalm 34:4 – I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.
- Years ago, church declining, only could trust God- Nothing changed, but me- no fear.
- 2. When Jesus shows up He conquers the impossible
we serve a supernatural believable God that can and does amazing miraculous feats - He’s an active participant in our daily lives and continually amazes us w the impossible
- Today- Easter Sunday- Resurrection Sunday we celebrate and rejoice on the resurrection
- The most outlandish claim of Christianity- Our Savior rose from the dead.
- And the most important- 1 Cor 15:17 And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Our Faith completely depends on the resurrection. It must be true. It has to be
- And it is! 1 cor 15:20 But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
- This is what Easter is- Jesus died, came back from the dead, forgave us of our sins. Believe it
- It’s a real story- He was really condemned, really mocked, really beaten, really whipped, really crowned with thorns, really nailed, really pierced, really bled, really died, really buried—and really rose on the third day.
- And then he He rose with a real body—He took real walks, had real conversations, ate real food, showed His real wounds, appeared to real people over 500 times, ascended in real time—and walked through real locked doors. John 20:19 – “…the doors were shut…”
- Wright – “Jesus’ body is ‘transphysical’… not less physical but more. Can be touched, eats food, yet appears through locked doors.” ( resurrected body transcends normal physics)
- 1 cor 15:42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption.
- Stewart – “Jesus’ body was still ‘flesh and bones’… entered locked room without dematerializing—this is miraculous, not symbolic.”( touchable, eats, yet walks through walls)
- I’ve seen barren women conceive, babies supposed to die live, bodies healed.
- The testimony is, doctors said no, Jesus said yes. Doors closed- became open- JESUS!!!
- Wrap your mind around the reality of our supernatural Jesus! He turned water into wine, walked on water, calmed storms with a word, healed the blind, made the lame walk,
- cleansed lepers, fed thousands with a few loaves, cast out demons, raised the dead, and forgave sins—
- This is why the Lord said to Abraham Gen 18:14 – Is anything too hard for the Lord?
- The answer is NO- No its not Jer 32:17 – There is nothing too hard for You.
- This resurrected Savior that we serve is not dead, he’s ALIVE and lives forever more
- He walks with us and he talks with us and he calls us friend! Can you imagine for a minute what it would be like, to be in the room, and Jesus to walk through a locked door.
- What else would there be to worry about? What impossible thing would come into your life that would cause you to have doubts about the ability of our God?
- This is probably why most of the disciples were martyred. They couldn’t deny what they had seen Jesus do in their presence!
- A promise of the resurrection is 2 Peter 1:4 that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature.
- We are not intended to become God or gods, but we are intended to become godly
- And that’s impossible! Mat 19:26 but with God all things are possible.
- Internalize this! This is a promise of the resurrection! The IMPOSSIBLE. Things that you think are not able to be fixed, repair, restored, renewed. We serve a God of the impossible!
- When Jesus shows up, the impossible bows. That’s what he does.
- 3. When Jesus shows up He claims the house
early marriage, long years. Up and gone before seeing anyone, and then home late an hour before the kids went to bed. Come home- nobody cared- ‘can you make a big deal’ MY HOUSE - John 20:19 – “…Jesus came and stood in the midst…”
- After the resurrection, Jesus went around for 40 days and handled business
- This scripture says- ‘stood in the midst’. It was apparent he was there. Not spectator
- When the presence of God comes into a house, a place, its palatable.
- This is a promise Exodus 29:45 – I will dwell among the children of Israel and be their God.
- And a reality- 2 Chronicles 7:1–2 – The glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord.
- This was and is fulfilled in Jesus John 1:14 – The Word became flesh and dwelt among us…
- Jesus calms our fears, does the impossible and then dwells with us!
- Psalm 8:4 What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?
- But that’s what Jesus wants and does with those who walk with him- he invades!
- Don’t miss this- if you don’t want Jesus- Jesus isn’t going to force himself on you
- Matthew 13:58 Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
- You don’t want to believe in Jesus? Go at it alone. Proceed accordingly. Your liberty
- Luke 8:37 Then the whole multitude of the surrounding region of the Gadarenes asked Him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. And He got into the boat and returned.
- He’s not shoving his way into your life- you have to surrender to him and welcome him
- You come to him and give your life to him and then he abides with you and you live for him
- These disciples are his people! His folks- he’s coming to encourage them no invite needed
- My house- your house should be a house dedicated to the things of God, and he will show up
- Revelation 21:3 – The tabernacle of God is with men… HE WANTS TO DWELL IN YOUR HOUSE
- Walked in my own house once and thought: “Doesn’t even feel like my place anymore.”
- Owned everything—but wasn’t present enough to feel like I belonged.
- Many spend thousands on a mortgage—then do everything they can to escape it.
- Fight to keep the house, then flee every weekend. Vacation is the goal, home is the burden.
- You scroll for vacation deals like you’re trying to flee a prison cell.\
- You book the Airbnb because your actual home never became a place of peace.
- We ask Jesus to bless the purchase, but never invite Him to dwell in the place.
- He’s not trying to visit your Airbnb—He wants to reign in your living room.
- Your home was never meant to be a hideout—it’s meant to be a holy place.
- But He won’t dwell where He’s ignored. INVITE HIM IN- Make your house a house for the Lord!
- 4. When Jesus shows up He activates your future
57% of Americans say they think about how to find more meaning and purpose in life at least once a month. - 75% of Millennials report they are actively seeking purpose and meaning, more than any other generation.
- 1 in 3 Americans say they feel a lack of purpose in their daily lives.
- Google searches for “purpose of life” and “why am I here” spike every year around New Year’s and major crises—people are always asking the big questions.
- After the resurrection and even now- Jesus shows up, in the room, conquering fears and says
- John 20:19 – “…and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’”
- When Jesus shows up he brings his peace. And this peace is the peace that passes all understanding and cant be fully understood outside of a relationship with him
- And if you’re here and looking for meaning, or you have forgot your purpose, post resurrection I’m telling you that Jesus had purpose for his disciples and he has purpose for you
- READ John 20:21-23 What do you see here? He Sends, He fills, He empowers
- Acts 1:8 – You shall receive power… and be witnesses to Me…
- Our calling, our purpose as we walk out the resurrection power of Jesus, when he shows up in our lives is sent out by Jesus himself to do his will (he empowers, equips, sends etc)
- We do it under the power of the Holy spirit, empowered to take the Gospel to the nations.
- If you are in that place- no meaning. No purpose. No future. Come to Jesus-
- When you come to Jesus- He’ll give you purpose. His peace bestowed upon you.
- When Jesus shows up…Fear flees.The impossible bows.The house shifts.The future opens.
- But here’s the question:Will you let Him in? Not visit. Not glance. Not peek through the blinds.
- Will you open the door and say—“This is Your house, Lord”?
- Because when Jesus shows up, He doesn’t come to be observed—He comes to take over.
- He doesn’t come to blend in—He comes to stand in the midst.
- He comes with peace for your panic, power for your impossibility, presence for your house, and purpose for your soul.But He won’t force His way in. He didn’t in the garden. He didn’t in the boat. He didn’t in the tomb. He knocks. He waits. He calls you by name But you’ve got to move.
- So let me ask you plainly: Do you want Him in your life?
- Do you want Him to walk into your fear and speak peace?
- Do you want Him to step into your mess and do the impossible?
- Do you want your house to feel like His house?
- Do you want to stop wandering and start walking in purpose?
Then this is your moment.
Jesus is not dead—He is alive.
And today, He’s showing up.
