Who Am I?
Wife, friend, nurse, mother, blessed, daughter, these are just a few of the names which describe who I am. First and foremost, as a Christian, I am a child of God. My identity, or who I exist as in this world, is found only in Christ. The topic of identity has become a frequent topic of discussion as the girls have entered adolescence.
People today, especially adolescents, struggle with their identity. As you know many are confused about who they are, how they fit in to the group and how to navigate through the ups and down’s the world throws at them. On-line things such as social media are greatly influencing our young adolescents. Studies and statistics show, that we are seeing the highest rates in specifically teen girls struggling with depression, isolation, and suicide because of on-line access. In addition, many are choosing to “identify themselves as ______ just to fit into a group. They stated that “having some identity even if it’s not truly the right one is better than nothing”. Knowing all of this, what are you doing to teach your children about their identity in Christ? Discussing this is of great importance because so many issues of life stem from understanding this one thing, identity.
These are just a few verses, certainly not an exhaustive list, describing our identity in Christ.
God created as man and women in His image. Genesis 1:27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God, He created him; male and female He created them.
God calls us His child. 1 John 3:1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore, the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
God fearfully and wonderfully made you. Psalm 139:13-14 For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
God calls you His special possession. 1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
God created you for a purpose. Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
God created you to be a part of a body. 1 Corinthians 12:18 But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased.
Daily, we must remind ourselves of who we are in Christ, who we belong to and what we were created for. Having this solid understanding will help guide us through all the things of life.
2 Peter 1:3 His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that though these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
