Faith in the Fire: Week 3 – “Faithful When We Fall”
Text: Exodus 32:15-35 Key Verse: Exodus 32:20
- You ever try to do the right thing, only to end up making a mess of it? You had good intentions, but somewhere along the way, things went sideways, and before you knew it, you were in deeper than you ever expected? Steeped in sin with seemingly no escape.
- That reminds me of a scene from Spider-Man 3. Even if you haven’t seen it, you probably know Spider-Man—Peter Parker, the guy trying to do good, save the city, and honor his Uncle Ben’s words: “With great power comes great responsibility.” But in this movie, something changes.
- Peter finds this strange black suit—an alien substance that bonds with him. At first, it feels like a gift. He’s stronger, faster, more confident. It amplifies everything in him—including his pride and anger. He starts making reckless choices, hurting people he cares about, and enjoying it.
- But then reality hits—he sees how much damage he’s done, and he realizes this thing has changed him. The problem is, it won’t just let go. The suit clings to him, and when he finally rips it off, it doesn’t just disappear—it finds someone else who fully embraces the darkness.
- That’s exactly how sin works. At first, it seems small, manageable, maybe even helpful. We justify it. We enjoy the feeling of control, power, or pleasure. But over time, it takes hold. It changes us. And when we finally wake up to the mess we’ve made, we realize we can’t just shake it off— distant from God. Afraid you’ve lost it all. Guilt. Shame. Embarrassment.
- Unlike Peter Parker, who had to struggle to remove the black suit on his own, God has already made a way for us to be set free. God is faithful when we fall. He knows. He sees. He redeems
- Sin may cling to us, but God’s faithfulness is greater. He doesn’t just help us fight—He sets us free. He is faithful when we fall.
- Scripture is clear that sin chases us and wants to destroy us. We can’t let it though
- Today we’re closing up the third week of our Faithful in the Fire series- Faithful when we fall.
When We Fall
- God is Faithful to Reveal Our Sin (Exodus 32:15-19)
- What is worse?. Placating someone or telling them the truth? Would you let someone walk off an edge of destruction? Go on a date with bad breath? No- you’d help them bc you love them
- God is the same way- He is faithful to reveal our sin. If you walk with God, and ask him, and read your word, he will tell you exactly whats wrong with you.
- Watching, praying, reflecting is about God revealing YOUR sin. Not others. He will Show it.
- Moses descends with the tablets, revealing Israel’s sin. He sees them dancing by the calf
- Sin is never hidden from God—He always exposes it in time. Either to you, or publicly if needed.
- Numbers 32:23 you have sinned against the Lord; and be sure your sin will find you out.
- God’s faithfulness includes confronting us when we go astray. He confronts bc he LOVES
- It’s a BLESSING that he shows us our sin because sin is DESTRUCTIVE. It will DESTROY YOU
- Job12:22 He uncovers deep things out of darkness, and brings the shadow of death to light.
- Its painful and embarrassing. The feelings of guilt and shame are overwhelming, but really, the conviction of the Holy Spirit is one of the greatest indications of his Faithfulness.
- Pr 28:13 He who covers his sins will not prosper!
- I want to prosper! I want my relationship with God, others, family, church etc. to FLOURISH
- I want the good life. I want to walk circumspectly with God. I hate sin.
- I’m getting older. I can’t eat big greasy meal late in day. In bed “don’t let me do this again”
- Tasted great going down- thought I’d be Ok. But I’m not. TELL ME MY SIN TO HELP ME OUT.
- Ecclesiastes 12:14 – For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.
- And praise God if you have a friend to help you. Quit being so defensive. You often can’t see your own stuff. And even if you see stuff in others? Let them give it back to YOU as well.
- Listen- I’m not encouraging you to look for sin in others- I’m telling you to receive it!! Don’t twist
- Jesus said it Luke 8:17 – For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light.
- God was doing Israel a favor by sending moses down when he did. It brought them back
- God is Faithful to Bring Consequences (Exodus 32:20)
- Hear me out- God is faithful when we fall when he brings consequences.
- Guilt, shame, embarrassment, loss, destruction, removal, decrease, whatever. Its good.
- Here’s the thing about consequences Hebrews 12:11 – Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
- Consequences are a blessing! They should keep you from future sin! God is FAITHFUL
- Moses destroys the calf and makes them drink the powder—sin has real consequences.
- God does not ignore sin; He deals with it to bring repentance.
- God’s discipline is not rejection—it is His faithfulness to restore after consequences
- This is one of the reasons why society is deteriorating. No consequences. They keep you!
- Even if I wasn’t a Christian, I wouldn’t commit crime because I don’t want prison
- But as Christians, if we never feel or experience consequences, we can continue in destruction
- Throughout Scripture- sin brings consequences, but God remains faithful to restore.
- Proverbs 6:27-28 – Can a man take fire to his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? Can one walk on hot coals, and his feet not be seared?
- Adam and Eve disobeyed and were cast out of Eden, David fell into adultery and murder, suffering family turmoil, Jonah ran from God’s calling, was swallowed by a great fish,. Peter denied Jesus in fear,. And in Jesus’ parable, the Prodigal Son squandered everything,
- Sin has real consequences, but if we turn back to God, His grace always has the final word.
- Matthew 7:26-27 – But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.
- sin has real consequences—spiritually, physically, and eternally. Don’t play with it
- Some consequences are immediate (guilt, separation, suffering), while others are eternal (judgment, death). Learn to praise God for the consequence. It brings Righteousness!
III. God is Faithful Even When We Feel Too Far Gone (Exodus 32:21-24)
- There’s a spiritual component that is the central point to this story and is the central point of Christianity. Sin separates from God, but God is faithful to make a way back to him
- Israel’s Sin Was Huge—But God Was Bigger
- The golden calf wasn’t a small mistake—it was outright idolatry just weeks after God delivered them from Egypt.
- They had seen the Red Sea split, manna fall from heaven, and God’s presence on Mount Sinai, yet they still turned away.
- If anyone deserved to be abandoned, it was them. But God is faithful when we fall.
- But instead of wiping them out completely, God disciplined them but still made a way for restoration. Because even when WE fall it doesn’t change who GOD is. HE IS FAITHFUL
- The Lie: “I’ve Sinned Too Much for God to Take Me Back”
- Many people believe they’ve gone too far for God to forgive them.
- Psalm 86:5 – For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You.
- You think, “I’ve done too much. I’ve broken too many promises. I’ve failed too many times.”
- But if God didn’t give up on Israel in this moment, He won’t give up on you either.
- Ps 103:10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punished us according to our iniquities.
- The fact that you are still here is living proof that we serve a living loving God. You should have died and been gone by now based on what you’ve done- we all have.
- The enemy wants us to stay in shame and distance ourselves from God, but God calls us back.
- God Still Had a Plan for Israel—And He Still Has a Plan for You- you are not done
- Despite their sin, God still led them to the Promised Land. Sin can be forgiven and lives restore
- Micah 7:18-19 READ
- Despite their rebellion, He still called them His people. Can somebody say “amen”?
- Your sin does not cancel God’s plan for your life. If you are derailed- get back on it.
- Yes, sin has consequences, but God’s mercy is greater than your worst failure.
- Isaiah 43:25 – I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; and I will not remember your sins.
- God is Faithful to Provide Atonement (Exodus 32:30-35)
- Moses intercedes, but he cannot take Israel’s sin upon himself. But he can go to God
- Only Jesus is the perfect intercessor and sacrifice.
- Our ultimate hope is in Christ, who bore our sin and secures our forgiveness.
- You don’t have what it takes to have God forgive you. You can’t fix it on your own.
- There are certain things that I am more than willing to pay for because I want someone else doing what I cant- Mechanic, plumbing, electrical, etc. I can do some, but not all
- What I realized is that when I try to do myself I make it worse instead of swallowing my pride and letting an expert do it. I’ll just hurt myself. It will take longer and cost me more.
- If you have sin or are in sin, the ONLY answer is to receive by Faith the forgiveness of Jesus
- Mark 2:10- But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”
- Acts 3:19 – Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.
- Jesus can and will forgive your Sin in the same Way God forgave Israel! You are not finished
- If you’ve never done it before- Confess- God is Faithful when we fall. Our worst days
- Romans 10:9 – That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
- tell God who you are and what you’ve done and ask him to forgive you and HE WILL
- You’ll be received as a son or daughter of the King
- If you find yourself in a cycle of sin- and you’re a professing Christian- Stay at the throne
- Psalm 32:5 – I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.
- tell God who you are and what you’ve done and ask him to forgive you and HE WILL
- You’ll be received as a son or daughter of the King- He is faithful when we fall.
- Romans 3:23-24 – For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
- Ephesians 1:7 – In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.
- God’s willingness to forgive those who turn to Him in repentance. He removes sin, blots it out, and casts it away—all made possible through Christ’s sacrifice.
V “God is Faithful, So Walk in Repentance and Be a Testimony” (Exodus 32:30-35)
- Since God is faithful even when we fall, our response shouldn’t be to stay in the cycle of sin and regret. His mercy should change how we live. True repentance leads to renewal, and renewal leads to a testimony that brings glory to God.
- True Repentance Means Turning Away from Sin- you don’t keep touching the stove
- israel had a choice—continue in rebellion or turn back to God. They couldn’t undo their sin, but they could choose to live differently moving forward.
- Repentance isn’t just saying, “I’m sorry.” It’s walking in a new direction.
- Romans 6:1-2 – What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?
- If God has been faithful to restore you, live like someone who has been restored! That means cutting off sinful habits, making different choices, and walking in obedience.
- True Repentance Produces a Changed Life
- Repentance isn’t about perfection—it’s about pursuing God instead of pursuing sin.
- It’s not enough to just feel bad about sin—we must replace it with a pursuit of righteousness.
- 2 Corinthians 7:10 – For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.
- Israel had to move forward as God’s people, not slaves to their past. If you have been forgiven, walk in the identity of someone redeemed!
- Your Story of Restoration Becomes a Testimony
- When people see someone who fell hard but was lifted up by God, it speaks louder than any sermon. Walk in Christ’s forgiveness and share with somebody that God forgives sin!
- Your failure doesn’t define you—your restoration does. God doesn’t just forgive us for our sake; He wants to use us as a testimony to others who feel too far gone.
- Who in your life needs to hear that God is faithful even after failure? Your testimony might be the encouragement they need. People get so overwhelmed, think they can’t come back.
- If God has been faithful to restore you, don’t waste that grace—walk in newness and be a witness to others. Don’t just return to the same patterns that led to your fall. Instead, let God’s faithfulness change how you live, and let your story of restoration point others back to Him.
- God is faithful when we fall—but will we walk in that faithfulness?
- Love people like someone who has been forgiven
