Let there be Light
Genesis 1:2-5 NKJV “The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.”
The earth was without form, and void; and darkness filled it. Like a newly built house or office building, it is pretty much just walls in the beginning, an empty dark void. What makes it a home is when you add all those beautiful fine touches to it, then add people to live in it.
The Bible does not tell us if this was right after Genesis 1:1, or if there was time between genesis 1:2 when God began adding the special touch to our beautiful planet.
Isaiah 45:18 CSB “For this is what the Lord says— the Creator of the heavens, the God who formed the earth and made it, the one who established it (he did not create it to be a wasteland, but formed it to be inhabited)— he says, “I am the Lord, and there is no other.”
Because God is supernatural and not a man like us, with just the words, “Let there be light”, He begun the process of creation of all that’s on the earth.
On day one God spoke light into being and He saw that it was good. He divided the light from darkness, but He did not eliminate all darkness altogether but added light to the day. Thank God, I can’t imagine a formless world full of darkness. I don’t like darkness at all because it is scary, and it is mostly in darkness that we see most evil take place.
There are many benefits to the physical light that God created. Light reveals/exposes, it guides, directs. It helps with growth, production, not to mention the joy it brings to wake up to a nice clear day. Physical light is great, but God has given us much more than just the physical light, He also gave us spiritual light as well, which is what we are talking about today.
Light in the Bible symbolizes righteousness, purity and holiness, while darkness represents sin and its evil effects.
What does the Bible have to say about the light?
- Light is one of God’s many attributes.
1 John 1:5 “…God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.”
John 8:12 “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
John 1:1-5 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”
These scriptures describe God’s nature, He is absolute perfection; He is holy and pure; in Him there is no sin or darkness at all.
- Light reveals truth and exposes what is hidden in darkness
One of the greatest qualities of physical light is that it helps us see clearly, the spiritual light of God in us reveals all things, nothing can be hidden from His light.
When our eyes are enlightened by the light of God, the truth of who He is begins to unfold and we also begin to recognize what’s good and what’s evil.
Ephesians 5:13-14 “ But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. 14 Therefore He says: “Awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”
Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD) said, “God is not only light but the source of all light…He illuminates the mind to understand truth and dispels the darkness of ignorance and sin.”
In the light of God, nothing can remain hidden. He exposes all works of darkness.
Luke 8:17 “For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light.”
We can do the works of darkness assuming that nobody sees, but the reality is that God sees it all. Nothing can be kept a secret from God, He sees all things, and in due time He will expose all works of darkness.
Psalm 139:7-12 NKJV “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? 8If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. 9If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, 10 Even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me. 11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall on me,” Even the night shall be light about me; Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You, But the night shines as the day; The darkness and the light are both alike to You.”
Let us not fool ourselves into thinking that we can do anything secretly. The truth is, we may fool everyone around us, but we can’t fool God. Those who manage to live secret lives think they are good at hiding things, but the reality is that because of His mercy, He may let you go on for a while, giving you time to turn away from works of darkness, but in time, there is nothing done in secret that will not be revealed.
As Christians we have to make a daily commitment of walking in the light. Living righteously even when it is hard to. Doing the right thing even when everyone around you chooses to do the opposite. Doing the right thing even where there is nobody watching. Be ok with being different.
We should not be associated with any works of darkness (sinful ways). We can’t walk in the darkness and expect not to stumble.
Ephesians 5:11-12 “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret.
Light exposes everything. Not just the sinful things we may be hiding from others, but also the things inside of us that we ourselves are blind to.
In many cases it is easy to see the darkness in others, but we can very easily miss it in ourselves. That is why we need the light of God shining in our hearts to reveal any hidden dark areas in ourselves.
Psalm 19:12-13 “Who can understand his errors? Cleanse me from secret faults. 13Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, And I shall be innocent of great transgression.”
We should constantly ask God search our hearts.
Psalms 139 23-24 “Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxieties; 24 And see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
The light of God shines into the deepest darkest parts of our hearts that we may not even realize exists. His light reveals this things, but it also purifies our souls.
Charles Spurgeon said, “The light reveals, but it also purifies. Walk in it, and you shall have fellowship with Him.”
- The light guides and directs our steps
Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Tried walking in the dark? It is not easy, and it is not fun at all. In fact, it is scary. It is scary when you can’t see where you are going, it’s scary when you don’t know if you are safe. (I don’t get why people go for walks/runs in the dark?! When we walk in the dark we are at risk of stumbling or running into stuff. Most crimes take place at night. (Use the example of walking at night in a familiar vs unfamiliar territory.)
Walking without the light of God to light up our path, is like for a hike at night in a forested area where you’ve never been before. None of us knows what tomorrow will bring, but when we let the Word of God be the light that light up our path, we don’t have to worry about it because we have God helping navigate, He will lead us on to the right path.
John 11:9-10 “Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. But if one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”
The Word of God is like a bright flashlight that helps us see what steps we need to take, and it never goes out no matter how long we use it. It lights up the path ahead, so we know just where we need to be, we know what or who to avoid, we know what’s of God and what’s not.
Psalm 37:23 “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way.”
Jeremiah 10:23 “O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.”
A Christian who doesn’t read the Bible on a regular basis, is like a person walking in pitch dark in unfamiliar territories without a flashlight and expects to perfectly find their way without stumbling or getting lost. This kind of Christian has themselves fooled and they are a perfect target for the enemy.
The word of God is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. We have to make it a priority because it is the flashlight that guides in this dark world we live in.
How can you expect to know what is expected of you if you don’t read the Bible that is supposed to guide you? (like trying to navigate your way in the pitch black in unfamiliar territory).
Ephesians 6 is clear about putting on the whole armor of God so we can withstand the devil, and one of those armors is the WORD -Our Flashlight.
Eph 6:17 “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”
What is expected of us now that we have the light of God in us?
- We are called to walk in the light. It is God’s desire for each one of us.
Walking in the light means knowing God and abiding in His truth. It is living a life of righteousness, purity and holiness. It is staying away from all works of darkness and living a life of obedience to Christ.
1 John 1:6-7 NKJV “If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
Ephesians 5:8-11 CSB “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light— 9for the fruit of the light[c]consists of all goodness, righteousness, and truth— 10 testing what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Don’t participate in the fruitless works of darkness but instead expose them.”
- Be the light
When I was in middle school, I was near sighted, but I didn’t even realize it. Things look blurry at a distance but because this was my norm, I assumed everyone else saw as I saw. I usually had to copy notes from my classmates or squint to see the blackboard, but I didn’t think much of it. It was normal for me, until later on in 9th grade I was asked to identify something that was at a distance, and I said that I couldn’t see clearly and that’s when my mom was informed that I had visual problems, and she took me to an eye doctor. – I got glasses, everything became clear, and I very quickly realized I had been walking almost “blind” and I didn’t even realize it.
That was all of us before we accepted Christ in our hearts. We walked around with things looking blurry and we assumed that everything was as it should because it was what’s normal to us then, until we invited God into our hearts, and when He came in, His light shone brightly, and we finally began to see clearly. We realized we had been walking spiritually blind.
The sad truth is that so many are walking around in the dark out there, and they think that that is what’s normal and right. Sadly even many so called “Christians” are walking around deceived by the ways of this world, it is up to us to go forth and be the light with the dark world around us, because if not us then who? If not now, when?
Matt 5:14-16 NKJV “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
People in our sphere of influence should see the light in you by how you act and talk, and if they don’t, it means that you are hiding your light or you are walking in darkness.
When we walk in the light, – living a life of obedience to God’s Word, people will see the fruits of your lifestyle and glorify God. When they will see how you act, how you talk, how you react to hard seasons, successful seasons, difficult situations, they will be curious to know this God that causes us to shine in the darkness.
Phil 2:14-15 NKJV “14 Do all things without complaining and disputing, 15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,”
Matthew Henry said, “God is light, and therefore it is our duty to walk in the light to conform to His holiness.”
This world is not getting any brighter, it keeps getting darker, but we who are in Christ have to keep shinning brighter and share the light of Christ with the lost so they can come to the light.
We are Christians, let us act and talk like it no matter where we are or who we are around. As we read Psalm 139, you cannot hide from God. Don’t take part in acts of darkness. Let us be the
light that God has called us to be. People are watching and listening to us whether we realize it or not. Be set apart. Don’t blend in with the world, be ok with being different. The world is weird and they are very loud and proud of it, why not us?!
The reality is that we are always representing a side at all times by how we live, the light side or dark side. It is a daily choice. Moment by moment choice
John 3:20-21 “For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”
1 Thess 5:4-5 “But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. 5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.
Walking in the light is choosing to abide in the Word of God. It is a commitment that we have to make each and every day to live a life pleasing to Christ. It is rejecting all fellowship with the darkness, no matter what it cost us.
There are many counterfeit lights out there, but the only true light is Jesus. All other lights are temporary, they make you feel good for a moment, only to leave you hanging dry after the light fades out. Jesus is the light of the world. And only those who follow Me shall not walk in darkness.
God calls us to be lights in the darkness…let your light shine
“We are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. … Let the light in us so shine before men, that they may see our good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;”
