Exodus 13:3-10 “because of what the Lord did for me”
- Remembering the Exodus: the feast is a day to remember and celebrate their deliverance
- Remember that God delivered them from Slavery AND that he was leading them into Prom L
- The Feast: Eat Bread w/o yeast for 7 days. Symbolizing the haste in which they left.
- There was no time for the bread to rise- they had to leave RIGHT THEN
- Teach Future Generations: Pass down this tradition to future generations. Its for now, and forever. It is a way to teach children about their history and God’s faithfulness.
- Symbolism of Unleavened Bread: symbol of their affliction in Egypt and their hasty departure. Reminder of hardships they endured and the miraculous intervention of God in deliverance
- Remembering is a good thing. Especially what God or others did for you. It matters
- I’m a NT Christian, so I’m looking for the application for how I live my life RIGHT NOW.
- We Should remember what God has done in our lives. We should feast. We should teach future generations of the faithfulness of God. We should look at symbolism and be drawn to God.
1. Because of what the Lord Did for me- I’m never going to forget
- Many relationships suffer because people forget what someone has done for them
- There’s no requirement with earthly relationships that someone remember what you did for them, but it sure helps the relationship when you do remember what someone did for you.
- Remember your wedding, your kids, your friends, who helped you get where, who was there
- We’re humans! We’re prone to forget because we are self centered people. (pics on wall help)
- Deut 8:2 And you shall remember that the Lord your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness Deut 8:18 – And you shall remember the Lord your God
- Israel was reminded to remember that the Jordan stopped with the Ark w stones.
- Joshua 4:7 And these stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever.
- Can you imagine being part of Israel and not remembering what God had done for them?
- I have no idea how my family ended up in America. I know they came from diff places, but there’s no family history passed down farther than the people whom I’ve met.
- Where’s the stories of God’s faithfulness? I’m here because of HUNDREDS of couples! Why?
- Because they didn’t REMEMBER and DO A FEAST and pass it down to their children.
- 1 Chr 16:12 – “Remember His marvelous works which He has done, His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth.”
- How many ways has God blessed you in your life? What specific tangible things has he done for you, through you and in spite of you? Other peeps? (This feast was a time of REMEMBRANCE)
- How was your deliverance? Healing? Provision? Protection? Miracles? Great things he had done
- Psa 77:11 I will remember the works of the Lord; Surely I will remember Your wonders of old.
- I’m never going to forget what God has done in my life and how he has blessed me and I’m not going to let my kids forget either. They have better lives than C and I, but I’ll remind them!
- Psalm 105:5 Remember His marvelous works which He has done, His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth.
- I’ve been at the same church for 20 years. I’ve pocketed more stories than I can count
- Psa 143:5 I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your works; I muse on the work of Your hands.
2. Because of what the Lord did for me- I’m not waiting for my bread to rise
- So Israel is told that they need to have this feast for 7 days and remember
- v8 And you shall tell your son in that day, saying, ‘This is done because of what the Lord did for me when I came up from Egypt.’
- What did the Lord do? Deliver them! And he delivered them so quickly and demanded their obedience to their deliverance from their circumstances that they couldn’t wait
- They didn’t have time to wait for the bread to rise, they had to leave RIGHT THEN
- No let me do one more thing, let me get my affairs in order, let me plan, when I’m ready, or can I wait a little longer, can I pray about it, when I’m ready, when it looks like its safe
- NO- I’m not waiting for my bread to rise. I’m out of here. I’m going right now.
- I’ve been in bondage too long. I’ve been in pain too long. Be waiting forever.
- I’m not waiting any longer even if it means I eat flat bread forever.
- 2 Corinthians 6:2 now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.
- Too many people hear from God, know what they are supposed to do and DON’T
- You’re supposed to stop dating that person, leave that job, get that job, give that money, get rid of that thing, stop doing that activity, start doing that activity. BUT YOU WAIT
- NOOOOO James 1:22 be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
- I’m not waiting for my bread to rise. I don’t know what a day will bring forth (Pr 27:1)
- I know what I got right now, and that’s a way and an plan out and I’m TAKING IT. I’M GOING
- God has a plan on my life, he’s doing something and I’m going where he’s taking me
- I’m not going wonder, or plan or figure it out before I go. I don’t know where he’s taking me, but I know where I don’t want to be- and its RIGHT HERE. I’m not WAITING FOR THE BREAD
- Proverbs 6:4-5 – “Give no sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids. Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, and like a bird from the hand of the fowler.”
- I’m going to run like a set of animals going for the ark when its raining. RIGHT NOW.
- Jesus taught us to do things quickly. Matthew 5:25 – “Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, the judge hand you over to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.”
- Things can get worse if you wait too long. The door is open for deliverance- TAKE IT
- And while we’re at it- I’m not waiting for your bread to rise either. He’s called us all, and your unwillingness to listen and act isn’t going to hold me BACK. I know what he said-
- Matthew 25:13 – “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.” (Get your affairs in order! Stop the sin, finances, health, relations,drugs)
- I don’t know when Jesus is coming back. I don’t know when- But I am not going to be found with my spiritual pants down- I’m going to be READY for Jesus when He comes back.
- Luke 12:35-36 – “Let your waist be girded and your lamps burning; and you yourselves be like men who wait for their master, when he will return from the wedding, that when he comes and knocks they may open to him immediately.”
- Luke 17:31 “In that day, he who is on the housetop, and his goods are in the house, let him not come down to take them away. And likewise the one who is in the field, let him not turn back. 32 Remember Lot’s wife. 33 Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it
- I’M NOT WAITING FOR MY BREAD TO RISE. I’VE GOT TO GO. HE’S TAKING ME SOMEWHERE
3. Because of what the Lord did for me- I’m going to teach the younger generation
- People end up forgetting what the Lord has done and waiting for their bread to rise because they give no care to teaching the next generation what the Lord has done.
- God put the provision of teaching the children into his plan to remind you.
- When you teach someone something you get better at it yourself. Teaching grows you.
- Deuteronomy 6:6-7 – “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.
- Some people’s kids end up off the track because they don’t teach their kids
- They teach them tablets and ipads not the tablets at sinai
- They teach them basketball, volleyball and baseball instead of the prophets of baal
- They teach them undisciplined lives because the parents aren’t disciplined.
- You don’t have them in your heart, so you cant teach it. You aren’t diligent. You don’t talk of them. You value your ‘me time’ and your indulgences more than keeping your kids from Hell.
- You allow disobedience in them and expect that somehow they are going to obedient to God.
- WHAT ARE YOU TEACHING YOUR CHILDREN? Pro 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”
- Training up isn’t shoving them into CM or YM. Its what you allow them to ingest in their lives and what kind of life you live before them day in and day out.
- Your marriage in shambles, unorganized defeated life in Christ preached to them every day
- Ephesians 6:4 bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.
- How are you training your children? What is your plan and procedure to lead them?
- Unfettered access to the internet? Whatever friends they want to have? They make the decisions? TEACH THEM THE STANDARDS OF THE WORD AND LIVE THEM OUT
- 2 Timothy 3:15 – and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”
- Psalm 78:4-6 – “We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and His strength and His wonderful works that He has done. READ
- Are you hiding them from your children? Do you want to have a spiritual legacy of belief?
- Many of you here are first generation Christians. It starts with you.
- We as a Church much train our children in the way in which they should go. WE MUST
- Titus 2:3-5 READ
- How do we do this? Get involved in CM or YM. When at Church and Mens events TALK
- I look at all the kids with the eyes of knowing they are the future of this church.
- 10 years from now dozens of them are going to married with Jobs. Here or in the fire.
- How I ttalk to them now, and what I talk to about them now is going to have COSMIC influence
- Ps 145:4 one generation shall praise Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts.
- I’m not going to miss this. I may not be still doing the feast of unleavened, but I’m not going to stop talking about what God has done.
- I want to tell the next generation about what God has done in MY LIFE and the life of HIS CHURCH
4. Because of what the Lord did for me- I’m not going to forget the symbolism
- The symbolism of the bread cant be understated. This bread, the actual physical bread, was supposed to give them a tactile physical reminder of the commemoration of the Passover
- Taking the bread, placing it in your mouth, should bring a sensory reminder of the event
- Fresh bread is awesome- Texas Roadhouse- Yeast rolls, Cheddars, butter croissants, outback, that brown bread, Old Spaghetti (im eating this) I make bread, its amazing. It’s a contrast
- So when you go from fresh fluffy bread to flat quick bread, it should remind you of something. But unleavened bread? Not as exciting. Pretty bland and boring.
- In OT unleavened bread was used in various contexts. Passover and offerings.
- Leaven was often seen as corruption or sin. Flatbread was purity.
- Bread and grain was present in many OT rituals- The Grain Offering loaves, cakes, or wafers, The Wave Offering: grain dedication and consecration The Firstfruits Offering: gratitude and of His provision. The Showbread (Bread of the Presence): twelve loaves of bread were placed on a table in the Holy Place of the tabernacle or temple. The bread symbolized the twelve tribes of Israel and was replaced with fresh loaves every Sabbath (Leviticus 24:5-9).
- It served as a perpetual offering, always in the presence of the Lord. This ritual underscored humanity’s complete reliance on God for both physical sustenance and spiritual nourishment. This bread stayed before God 24-7 and symbolized his presence.
- The Priests would consume the bread (the presence of God- The Covenant- His provision) every sabbath as a ritual. But the bread, which they had made, symbolized God.
- NOW- The SYMBOLS that we have in the NT matter. (They don’t save us)
- John 6:35 And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.
- Like unleavened bread, Jesus is without sin (Hebrews 4:15). His sacrifice on the cross is pure and undefiled, offering redemption and salvation to all who come to Him in faith.
- It means a lot more when you realize that the feast of the unleavened bread has been satisfied in Christ and we’re no longer Required to do it.
- Through Jesus, believers partake in a spiritual feast, receiving nourishment for their souls and eternal life. bread sustains physical life, Jesus sustains spiritual life for those who trust in Him.
- But we do communion. Often. To REMEMBER OUR deliverance and OUR Passover
- That Jesus has become our shewbread and the continual presence Of God in OUR lives
- BREAD IS LIFE to most peoples of the earth, for americans we cut carbs.
- Bread is Nourishment and Sustenance: spiritually and physically Unity and Fellowship: communion and meals shared Transformation and Growth: raw ingredients to finished product through kneading, rising, and baking. This process symbolizes the spiritual transformation and growth that believers experience Sacredness and Sacrifice: When you give up your grain that you need, you are giving up your life source to trust God. Simplicity and Accessibility: Bread is in every culture- (God made provision for all to have bread) in the same way- God makes provision for us all to have access to him through the Bread of Life.
- I’m gonna eat bread unto the Lord. I’m never going to forget.
- We don’t do the feast of tabernacles. We live the feast every day. He has delivered us
