- A Faithful People (Hebrews 3:7–15)
Have you ever noticed that teams and individuals do better when someone cheers them on? There’s a reason teams have ‘home field advantage’ There’s a reason teams do better at home: encouragement changes performance
- We want to be faithful people to the Lord but we can’t do it alone. We need each other.
- We want to be faithful people to the Lord, but faithfulness starts with looking to the One who was faithful first. We can’t do it alone that’s why Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit and each other
- let’s look back at where this warning came from: the wilderness generation
- the author quotes ps 95 connected to Num 14: the pinnacle rebellion at Kadesh Barnea
- God brought Israel to the edge of the Promised Land Kadesh Barnea and told them to go in.
- Twelve spies went out. They all saw the same land, the same giants, the same promise.
- But ten came back with fear; only two came back with faith. ///
- Joshua and Caleb said, “Let’s go up at once we can do this!” but the rest of Israel panicked.
- They forgot the God who split the sea and fed them from heaven. They grumbled, rebelled, and even talked about going back to Egypt.
- That moment sealed their fate. God said that generation would die in the wilderness they would never enter His rest. Every male died// except for Joshua and Caleb. Those 2 had faith.
- For Israel, rest meant entering the land of promise. For us, rest means living in the promises of God through faith in Christ. They missed out on the promises because of unbelief.///
- They stood at the border of blessing but turned back in unbelief. They were right there!
- Hebrews writer connects with the right now in the exact same spiritual situation in Christ-
- Unbelief: refusing to trust God’s promise even after seeing His power.
- Disobedience: rejecting God’s command to move forward in faith.
- Presumption: trying to enter without repentance, attempting salvation on their own terms.
- the challenge for the Hebrews in antiquity and us today- will we trust his promises after we’ve seen him move? Will we continue to move forward in Faith? Will we try to do it on our own?//
- Believers can harden their hearts through unbelief just as Israel did and miss God’s rest.
1. To be a faithful people we must Act Today
- Faith always responds now, not later– throughout scripture, when God speaks, His people act.
- “Today if you hear His voice.” Is the beginning of this scripture and it has a deep meaning.
- We respond today to a today blessing of “right now” but there is a future blessing of “not yet”
- Many of God’s blessings are timebound. You must respond to them TODAY and if you don’t you lose the opportunity of blessing. The ark closes, the people move out of the desert, Life ends.
- When scripture says “today” its an opportunity and warning- Grace now or judgement later.
- Hebrews writer puts that same immediacy- you’re new believers. You’re tired, you’re being persecuted, if you don’t correct, you’re going to drift away and miss the promised rest.
- The language of today is not a calendar date. It’s a divine date of right now empowered by the Holy Spirit as he speaks the living word. It was today in baresh, today in psalms, today in heb.
- The spirit continues to speak through scripture. TODAY to you and I. We must respond!
- Faith isn’t just agreeing in your mind it’s responding to the living voice of Jesus. Every act of obedience is an act of love toward Him. unresponsiveness isn’t just rebellion it’s missing an invitation to walk closer with Him. WHAT IT MEANS TO YOU
- You hear God’s truths often. Are you responding to them ‘today’ or is everything a deferral.///
- True faith responds. It doesn’t delay. It doesn’t procrastinate or negotiate. It hears and obeys.
- We’ve always said- Delayed obedience is disobedience. When the Lord speaks- we act.
- Ex 40:16 Thus Moses did; according to all that the Lord had commanded him, so he did.
- Psalm 119:60 I made haste, and did not delay to keep Your commandments.
- Here’s a truth- The longer you think about it the more likely you are to talk yourself out of it.
- I’ve had many times in my life where lingering disobedience caused spiritual turmoil in my soul because I refused to respond to the promptings of the HS. Big or small. God wants immediate.
- Here’s the good news- if you’re conflicted or have turmoil that’s good! The HS is still working!
- But TODAY you can choose a path of immediate obedience to the word and the spirit.
- But there’s another spiritual component– A phone call, giving something, action, stopping
- Matthew 9:9 As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” So he arose and followed Him.
- When Jesus calls you to him or away from something, you get up and follow. You get onit
- If you stop responding immediately, there is a likelihood of a hardening heart but…
- The same Jesus who said ‘Follow Me’ to Matthew says it to you today not with condemnation, but with compassion for your soul and that’s why the writer warns us next: Keep a Soft Heart.
2.To be a faithful people we need to Keep a Soft Heart
12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God;
- That’s the outcome of a heart that lives in constant disobedience. An evil heart that departs.
- Because disobedience is unbelief. It says God did not say, or God did not mean. It bargains.//
- Because disobedience is unbelief it doubts the goodness of the God who already proved His love at the cross This was the reality of the nation of Israel in the desert:
- Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion……In the day of trial in the wilderness,
- Don’t miss the connection with Kadesh Barnea. Israel hardened their hearts. Did not stay soft
- This is not rhetorical. The author believes apostasy is a real danger for professing believers.///
- The verb aphistēmi (“depart”) : withdraw, fall away, or revolt the same root for “apostasy.”
- You can depart from God.// We covered this before. Not lose. Depart. A slow drift.
- not sudden loss of faith: it’s slow neglect to unbelief.(miss workout, overeat time=eventual loss)
- God brought Israel to the edge of the Promised Land. Spies reported the fruit of the land, but ten spoke fear and discouraged the nation. Instead of moving forward in God’s promise they wanted to go back to Egypt, they rejected Joshua and Caleb, and they even wanted to stone God’s messengers. Their unbelief closed the door to the blessing they stood beside; judgment followed because they hardened their hearts.
- They stood at the border of blessing, chose fear over faith, and in doing so forfeited the promise Hebrews warns us not to harden our hearts the way they did.//
- What it means to you is that you keep your heart soft by staying in belief. You continue in faith
- Keep your heart soft toward Jesus stay sensitive to His voice. The more you walk with Him, the softer your heart becomes. The more you respond to ‘today’ the softer your heart stays
- God promises you a blessing, a promise and you continue in faith. You don’t look back-forward
- Ps Kevin said it so beautifully on Wednesday- Faith looks out the window, not at a wall.
- Here’s us- We hear a promise and hesitate. We believe our fears instead of God’s word
- We complain and look back. Unbelief always romanticizes the past. It resists progress.
- We reject correction. Unbelief HATES voices of faith. Faith voices challenge our comfort.
- We attack God’s messengers- Pastors or people. Conviction feels like an enemy
- Here’s the result. We lose the promise- Unbelief always leads to loss/// not because God withdraws His promise, but because we refuse to walk into it.it was OUR hard hearts//
- They stood at the border of blessing but chose fear over faith. And here’s the truth: if you’re not going to be led by faith, something is going to lead you… and it’s usually sin.
3. Beware of sin in the camp
The drift happens because of sin. Plain and simple. You sin you drift. You lose belief you drift.
- Faithful people watch over their sins and the sins of others! Individual and collective
- “lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin”
- Sin is deceptive. It costs you more than you thought it should, keeps you longer than you thought it would and destroys you more than you thought it could.
- That warning: ‘lest any of you’ means nobody’s immune to the destruction. Even me.
- Numbers verse- Sin Started Small: ten spies who doubted God’s word. Fear deceived their hearts before it deceived the nation. And then Sin Spread Fast a few soon infected the whole camp. Unbelief multiplied through complaint and fear until an entire generation turned back.
Here’s the process:
- Sin Deceives Sin lies. It never tells you the full cost up front. ”the serpent deceived me”
- Sin Hardens Sin and unbelief grow together each makes the other harder to uproot.
3. Sin Enslaves Sin starts as a choice and ends as a chain .Surrender to a cruel master. - Sin Kills Sin always pays in death: physically, spiritually, relationally.
- Sin Separates Sin creates distance between you and the God who wants closeness.
- So we must be fully aware of our own sin. Constantly reflecting “any wicked way in me”
- Hebrews 3:12–13 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief… lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin
- But watching over ourselves isn’t enough. We have to watch over each other in love and grace
- James 5:19–20 Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins. James says real love rescues turning someone back saves their soul and covers sin.
- “buts it no ones business”. Bro. Catch this. You either see your connection with your church as casual or covenantal./// There’s no middle ground. We’re either together or we’re not.///
- And we ARE. 1 Corinthians 12:25–26 but that the members should have the same care for one another. And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; (shelly w cancer or sin)
- ***If you are in sin, you are dying and if you’re dying, I’m grieving. We’re family, and Christ’s love compels us to pull each other out of the fire.
- The effect? Worship is flattened. Progress slows. Lives are destroyed. The ekklesia is fractured
- Ro 12:5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.
- Deal with your personal sin! Don’t infect the camp! Watch over your brothers in love.
- *And YOU TALK TO THEM ABOUT IT. NOT OTHERS YOU COWARD. GOSSIP ISNT WATCHING OVER
- You build relationships with accountability built in. where you’re honest about where you are at, and allow others to speak into your life and then OBEY THEIR REBUKE. Don’t be alone!
- Faith recently messaged an acquaintance about her dress on insta. Loving. Cautious. Girl was ruining her witness. No response. A month later- tell me. Show me. Sent pics to faith. WOW
- You commit to sin eradication in yourself and then you allow others to help you do it.
4. we stay faithful when Exhort One Another Daily
- We stay faithful together through daily encouragement.
- but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,”. The today of obedience is the same today of encouragement. It must happen today. It must happen right now.
- For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, This is The Remedy against sin and drift: Daily Exhortation and Mutual Care
- This is the theological heart of the passage. Faithfulness is not a solo project.
- The Greek parakaleite (exhort, encourage, call alongside) echoes the work of the Parakletos the Holy Spirit. The Church becomes a Spirit-formed community of mutual perseverance.
- If sin isolates, encouragement reconnects. If sin hardens, exhortation softens.
- The Church is God’s antidote to apostasy. Sanctification happens in community.
- I can go to the gym, put on headphones in and out no problem. But church aint that.
- Mutual exhortation is not mere cheerleading it is a covenantal act of rescue.
- My faith is partly sustained by your faith and your faith by mine! I know I need my brothers here
- There’s been times when I didn’t think God could do it, I could do it, it would happen etc. But it was the people of God who kept me standing. Things got better bc I was encouraged!
- WE comfort one another 1 Thes 5:11, We bear one anothers burdens Gal 6:2, we are like minded towards one another Rom 15:5, We are Kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love in honor giving preference to one another Rom 12:10 We bear with one another in love Eph 4:2, We are kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave us Eph 4:32 and have “fervent love for one another” 1 Peter 4:8-10
- This is why weekly gathering is critical and crucial. We must be together weekly to walk it out
- He 10:24–25 let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another,
- not a numbers game. a reality of the necessity of endurance dependent on each others faith
- what we do here- Retreats, bible studies, small groups, church etc. Is to build the foundation of a daily exhortation. Build relationships so you can ‘exhort daily’.
- You can’t exhort daily if you’re rarely present.You know no one and no one knows you
- Not just here- out there. Small groups at steadfast and immovable. Text, call, catch up.
- Your pastor does as much as he can, but it can’t all be on me. This is mutual edification, not individual exhortation where I make 120 calls a week to 120 guys. I cant do it. Many already do
- Even Moses needed seventy elders and I don’t have that kind of staff and deacons.
- Make a commitment to be committed. Encourage one person a day. A text, a call, a message.
- It keeps you connected to the body. Don’t wait for someone else to do it. You do it.
- Faith responds to Jesus, faith endures through Jesus, faith repents before Jesus, and faith encourages others toward Jesus. That’s what it means to be a faithful people.
