Joy Cannot Be Manufactured, Even When Life Feels Out of Control
Summary:
As storms hit our region this week, many people lost homes, possessions, roads, and access. Some were evacuated with minutes to spare. This week reminded us how quickly life changes and how fragile our routines are. Joy built on perfect circumstances collapses when the rain comes. But joy built on Jesus cannot be washed away. We do not achieve joy. We receive it from the God-appointed High Priest whose love never shifts with the weather.
Scripture:
Hebrews 5:5 So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: You are My Son, today I have begotten You.
Reflection:
Think of a moment this week when the storm exposed how little we truly control. Where did you look for joy or stability in that moment? Where might you have looked to Jesus instead?
Action:
Choose one fear or stress caused by the storm, speak it aloud to God, and surrender it to Him.
Prayer:
Lord, I cannot manufacture joy. Help me receive it from You, especially when circumstances feel uncertain.
Day 2 Monday
Joy Because Jesus Destroyed Man Ran Religion
Summary:
When floodwaters rise, we are reminded that human structures do not last. Roads wash out. Power grids fail. Homes flood. Schedules change. But God-appointed things stand firm. The priesthood of man collapsed repeatedly throughout history, but Jesus stands forever. If your joy depends on human systems, it will shake this week. If it depends on Christ, it will hold firm.
Scripture:
Colossians 1:18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
Reflection:
What “man built” thing let you down this week? A plan? A structure? A normal routine? A sense of control? How is Christ inviting you to rest in His unshakeable calling?
Action:
Write down one place where your confidence has been misplaced, and deliberately shift it to Jesus.
Prayer:
Jesus, my joy does not rest in anything man built. It rests in You. Teach me to stand on what You have appointed.
Day 3 Tuesday
Joy Because We Are Not Alone in Our Pain
Summary:
The flooding and destruction in the PNW have brought real grief. People are sorting through ruined possessions. Roads remain closed. Some have nowhere to return. In moments like this, Jesus does not demand a cheerful face. He is the High Priest who understands sorrow. The One who cried in the manger and cried at Gethsemane is with you now. Joy begins with knowing you do not walk through the storm alone.
Scripture:
Psalm 34:18 The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.
Reflection:
Where did you feel fear or sadness this week when the storms hit? How does knowing Jesus is near to the brokenhearted change how you carry that moment?
Action:
Reach out to one person affected by the storms and offer them a simple prayer or word of encouragement.
Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for entering my grief. Walk with me through fear, loss, and uncertainty. Be near to every person affected by the storms this week.
Day 4 Wednesday
Joy Begins With Honesty, Not Performance**
Summary:
Some people feel guilty when they do not feel joyful during the Christmas season. Add storms, evacuations, and a difficult week on top of that, and it becomes even harder. Jesus never asked us to pretend. He asked us to come. Advent begins in longing, waiting, uncertainty, and need. If you are tired this week, if you feel shaken, you are exactly where Jesus meets people.
Scripture:
Matthew 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Reflection:
What emotion have you tried to hide this week? Fear? Frustration? Disappointment? Exhaustion? What would it look like to bring that openly to Christ?
Action:
Tell God one thing today you have been pretending is fine.
Prayer:
Lord, I bring You the real version of me today. Meet me in my honesty. Comfort me in the places that feel unsettled.
Day 5 Thursday
Joy Because His Reign Is Eternal**
Summary:
Storms disrupt everything. The ground shifts. Plans disappear. Stability evaporates. But Jesus reigns eternally. When everything temporary shakes, the eternal stands taller. Kings fail. Leaders change. Circumstances shift. But the High Priest appointed forever does not move. Let joy rise today not because life is stable, but because He is.
Scripture:
Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Reflection:
What temporary thing were you leaning on for peace that the storm destabilized? What does anchoring your heart in Christ’s eternal reign look like today?
Action:
Speak this simple confession three times today:
“Jesus is the same. Jesus is with me. Jesus reigns.”
Prayer:
Lord, even when the world around me shakes, You remain the same. Anchor my joy in Your eternal reign.
Day 6 Friday
Joy Because There Is No Weakness in Our Savior**
Summary:
Many in our region feel worn down after a stressful week. Cleanup efforts continue. Roads remain blocked. Some are still displaced. Our strength runs out quickly. But our Savior’s strength never does. Christmas declares that the world was not given a fragile hope but an unbreakable one. Jesus stepped into weakness so He could lift us out of ours.
Scripture:
2 Corinthians 12:9 My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.
Reflection:
Where have you felt your weakness most in the past few days? How might Jesus want to carry you in that exact place?
Action:
Ask for help from someone today instead of doing everything alone.
Prayer:
Jesus, I am tired in ways I do not even know how to say. Strengthen me with Your strength and carry those who cannot carry themselves today.
Day 7 Saturday
Joy We Can Walk In Today**
Summary:
Joy is not postponed until storms pass or life stabilizes. Joy is available today because Jesus is available today. The flood may have taken things from people this week, but it cannot take the joy that comes from Christ’s eternal, unchanging priesthood. Walk into today with a calm confidence: the Savior who stepped into your world also steps into your storm.
Scripture:
Psalm 30:5 Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.
Reflection:
Where do you need joy the most right now? What step can you take toward Christ to receive joy instead of waiting for circumstances to improve?
Action:
List three ways Jesus has been faithful to you this week, even in the middle of instability.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You that joy comes from You alone. Fill my heart today with a joy that cannot be washed away by storms, fear, or uncertainty.
