It’s Not Good to Be Alone Genesis 2:18-25
Genesis 2:18-25 – 18 And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” 19 Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to [a]Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.
21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He [b]made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.
23 And Adam said:
“This is now bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called [c]Woman,
Because she was taken out of [d]Man.”
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be[e] joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
- By the time we get to Genesis 2:18 – God has already
- Created heavens and earth
- Created light and separated it from darkness
- Separated water above and below
- Created sea, dry land, vegetation, plants, trees
- Sun, moon and stars
- Created the animals both on land and sea
- Created Adam
- Blessed it and said it was good!!!
- However, He looked at Adam and says to him – even though you are surrounded by beauty and all kind of animals – you are still alone and that is no bueno – not good!
- And He says let’s fix that – I will give you a helper
- Vs 19 comes after vs 18 – and if I take it for face value –Immediately Adam is put to work alone
- God brings every animal, bird, sea creatures and gives him an assignment to name all of them
- Right here we see 3 things from:
-
- Adam is super smart – I cannot even name all the animals in the Kenyan Jungle, and I am Kenyan
- None of the animals were fit to be an equal (fit) companion – Your animal is not equal to a human companion in the eyes of God – Stop humanizing animals – I lost half the listeners
- It was a major task, it was either tiring, or it took a long time, and he could have used help – a companion!
- God being all knowing and having a plan, put him to sleep and took one of Adams libs and formed Eve – his companion -And all those who have an Eva in their lives say Amen!!
- And we see Adam, not God – being so happy that he has someone who is part of him, and he gives her part of his name (man) as a remembrance that they are both one
- Adam says:
-
- This is the bones of my bones
-
- Fresh of my fresh
-
- Woman – came out of a man
- And vs 24 – quickly there after tells us that -That a man when joined to his wife, they become one – don’t mistake/ignore/discount the union
- And vs 25: – The man and wife were both naked and were not ashamed or embarrassed
- There was openness, transparency, union, oneness, there was nothing hidden among them – they were free in the presence of each other and God – that will preach!!!
- This is what it should be like in the marriages and also in the House of God – Among the bride of Christ and in our homes, there shouldn’t be hidden sins, pretending, smear campaign, hidden agendas, – there should be unity, openness
-
- Ephesians 4:25 (NLT) So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body
-
- Colossians 3:9 (NLT) Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds
- I do not like being alone
- The Bible has a lot to say about being with each other – And right from the beginning the Bible says “It is not good for a man to be alone
- I like being alone
- The girls will have an event, and I will be excited that they are going away, and I can have the house to myself
- I even pick a real movie to watch or a car- YouTube channel
- I kiss them goodbye and kick them out of the house and I am like freedom
- Sit on the couch and am like let’s go ….
- Then 9.5 minutes later, I am like – Babie, Eva….Simone, Alissa – Zuri , Nala – I am like its too quiet out here – Let me go and check on the chicken
- Once you have experienced the warmth of companion- it’s hard to not long for it
- The world knows it’s a well – that is why a trip is better when there are more people, social clubs, social media (Fake but still counts)
- God knew exactly what He was doing when He created Eve and made them one
- This union between man and woman was a preparation of Christ and the Church union
- Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 (NLT) Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. 10 If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble
- Galatians 6:2 -Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ
- Philippians 2:1-4 – Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? 2 Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose.
- 3 Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too
- It is becoming harder to live out these Bible verses outside the Church – and honestly unfortunately its spilling into the Church as well
- We are in a society that can survive alone and thrive (in the worldly way) and need no one
- I am sad when I hear Christians saying that they don’t like people – How are you going to be able to comfort, agree with each other whole heartedly, working with one mind and purpose?
- Who is holding you accountable? How are you walking the call to be a disciple?
- Divide and conquer – the best tool of the enemy!
- I am not talking about being with everyone all the time -Honestly, some of you need to stop being with other people all the time and work on your affairs with God
- You have filled yourself with people – I don’t like being alone- That you have no room for the Holy Spirit to say anything to you privately – He is like on the side of the double dutch game…is it my turn?
- Pastor Matt says, nothing good happen at night after 10pm – and so nothing good happens when we have an extended time alone – you are called to be part of a community!
- Let me talk to married people for a second; – single people take notes for you or for you to rebuke those that don’t serve well in their marriages
- Husband – (Ephesians 5:25–27) For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her 26 to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word.[a] 27 He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault
- I want to bring to your attention a few things here
- Christ gave up His life to make the Church Holy and clean – He did this to present her a glorious church – so she can be Holy and without fault
- You my friend are not just called to be a Husband that is passive, you have been called to sacrifice for your wife and through this sacrifice, she will learn to be without fault
- What does that look like:
- How you talk, walk and do life is teaching your wife how
- How you spend time in the Word of God is teaching your wife how
- How you pray – your relationship with God is teaching your wife how
- The lack of the above is also teaching your wife how
- She can only be a helper as you have taught or allowed her to be – it’s your fault if you are not modelling this in your household
-
- Husbands be joyful that you have a wife and involve her in all your dealings so that she can thrive in who God has created her to be – Your helper
- Wives, Ephesians 5:22–24- For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church. 24 As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything
- Wives, let me bring to your attention a few things as well:
- Submit to your husbands as to the Lord – You can’t submit to your husband if you have not submitted to God – Your intimate walk with Christ (I am not talking about look at me) I am a Christian. This will determine whether you are submitted as a HELPER to your husband or not
- A helper is not passive – She must learn what her “Lord” wants -which is not just instructions but a companion who want the best for him
- A helper does not elevate herself among people and make your husband look bad- it’s actually against the Bible –
-
- James 4:11 (NLT) Don’t speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters.[a] If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God’s law. But your job is to obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you
-
- Speaking evil, gossiping, or slandering others isn’t just hurting them — it’s actually rebelling against God’s law of love. When we talk badly about others, we step out of obedience and step into judgment, a place only God belongs
- I love this story of Jonathan and his armor bearer (Philistines and Israelites)
-
- 1 Samuel 14:6–7 Let’s go across to the outpost of those pagans,” Jonathan said to his armor bearer. “Perhaps the Lord will help us, for nothing can hinder the Lord. He can win a battle whether he has many warriors or only a few!” 7 “Do what you think is best,” the armor bearer replied. “I’m with you completely, whatever you decide.
- Wives, be armor bearers to your husbands – You don’t say: I am with you completely, whatever you decide” unless you truly one in mind and heart!
- Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (NLT) – Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. 10 If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble
2. You don’t have to be alone
- God has been fighting for His people from the beginning of time – Even today He is still doing the same
- His presence is what we yearn for – Hence we sing songs that invites the Holy Spirit companion
- We love the reassurance of God’s presence, meaning we do need His companion, and we never want to be alone
- That is why we love verses like:
- Deuteronomy 31:6 (NKJV) Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you
- Isaiah 41:10 (Nkjv) -Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand
- Psalm 23:4 (Nkjv)- Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me
- Hebrews 13:6 -So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”
- When we are repeating these verses, hanging them on our walls, tattooing them on ourselves, we are naturally responding to how we were created- Not to be alone because you need a helper
- And if there was a major gift in our human life, it was Jesus walking among us – How I would have loved to be among the crowd and hear Him teach, pray, speak e.t.c
- He was a helper to many, when it came to spiritual needs – casting our demons, physical healing, feeding the hungry – compassion to all who needed it – Even help by speaking the truth to those that didn’t want to hear it but needed it
- Hebrews 4:15-16 -This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testing we do, yet he did not sin. 16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most
- Yet, Jesus being our greatest helper says these words that we take casually…
-
- John 16:7 ( -However, I am telling you nothing but the truth when I say it is profitable (good, expedient, advantageous) for you that I go away. Because if I do not go away, the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you [into close fellowship with you]; but if I go away, I will send Him to you [to be in close fellowship with you]
- Wooo! – wait a minute – Jesus – what are you saying – Put yourself in the disciples’ shoes – Jesus the greatest of all want to leave so that ……as he says this everything else fades away – I am not sure they heard the rest
- But Jesus knew that His time was coming to an end and because it’s not good for man to be alone, He promised them a helper – Holy Spirit
- Advocate in Greek is Paraklētos, which means “helper, comforter, encourager, or one called alongside
- He the Holy Spirit will continue what Jesus had begun – John 14:26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you
- Vs 27“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
-
- The Holy Spirit – your helper – you are never meant to be alone – is a gift that brings teaching, reminds you and keeps peace of mind and heart – how, He reminds us of What Jesus has already taught and promised, and then teaches us as we go on day to day –
- We cannot afford to be alone – we cannot afford to be without a helper – How can you?
- I was talking with someone a few weeks ago and I said – it’s interesting how we have worldly plans, we have calendars, we have hacks, we have savings, we have insurance, we have all the necessary good things in life that are essential- Yet we pay very little if any attention – to the helper that knew you before you were born, knows what the rest of the evening looks like for you , the whole world and most importantly knows about your future – Yet, we ignore the Holy Spirit constantly
- Romans 8:26-27 -And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. 27 And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers[a] in harmony with God’s own will.
- I searched for a Bible verse that says that people ignore the Holy Spirit – and the closest I could get was – 1 Thessalonians 5:19 (Amp) Do not quench [subdue, or be unresponsive to the working and guidance of] the [Holy] Spirit
- The Bible writers inspired by the Holy Spirit could not even Comprehend living without the guidance of the Holy Spirit
- How do we not subdue, ignore or not respond – remember when I said some of you need 1 on 1 with God more than all the human influence?
- Jesus demonstrated this constantly:
- When Jesus was among the people – most of the time He would retreat away from the people to pray – and rest
- The upper room:
- Acts 1:14 (Amp) All these with one mind and one purpose were continually devoting themselves to prayer, [waiting together] along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers……The Holy Spirit fell on them
- How is your prayer life – The level of your prayer is directly related to the strength of your helper – How much you allow Him to do
- Luke 11:13 -If you, then, being evil [that is, sinful by nature], know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask and continue to ask Him!”
- Check this as I close – Ephesians 1:13–14 – In Him, you also, when you heard the word of truth, the good news of your salvation, and [as a result] believed in Him, were stamped with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit [the One promised by Christ] as owned and protected [by God]. 14 The Spirit is the [a]guarantee [the first installment, the pledge, a foretaste] of our inheritance until the redemption of God’s own [purchased] possession [His believers], to the praise of His glory.
- It sad that most of us don’t create an “upper room” in our day to day or even in our hearts – We are all over, looking for solutions while a first installment has already been paid!!
- If the Holy Spirit is just a down payment – how is the rest of what God has promised us look like?
- 1 Corinthians 2:9 (Amp) “Things which the eye has not seen and the ear has not heard,
And which have not entered the heart of man,
All that God has prepared for those who love Him [who hold Him in affectionate reverence, who obey Him, and who gratefully recognize the benefits that He has bestowed].”
