- We want to Win The Battle- with sin, flesh, spiritual warfare etc. 2 Chron 32:1-8
- Some background: 2 Chronicles 31 describes King Hezekiah’s reforms in Judah. He reinstates proper worship practices, allocates resources for priests and Levites, and encourages the people to tithe. As a result, there is abundance in the temple, and the people experience prosperity and spiritual revival under Hezekiah’s leadership.
- King Sennacherib of Assyria comes to try and take down Judah
- Who knows that the enemy only comes against you when things are going good?
- It’s right when you think that you have everything dialed in, that the enemy comes.
- If you’re in complacency, nothing happens. If you’re just hanging out, nothing happens.
- ALWAYS when things are as good as they can be. The Devil only attacks adversaries.
- US Never goes to war with Canada because Canada never comes for us. Warfare 101.
- READ 2 Chron 32:1-8
- Summary- King Sennacherib of Assyria threatens Judah, prompting King Hezekiah to fortify Jerusalem. He consults with leaders, stops water sources outside the city, and strengthens defenses. He builds walls, repairs structures, and encourages the people, emphasizing trust in the Lord for protection. Despite facing a formidable enemy, Hezekiah’s leadership instills confidence in the people of Judah.
- Who was King Hezekiah? READ 2 Kings 18:1-8 25 yo when made king, reigned 29 years, did what was right in the sight of the Lord, removed idols, trusted in God, no one else like him, held fast to the Lord, Did not depart from him, kept his commandments, the Lord was with Him, He prospered wherever he went.
- Pretty righteous man. One that we can look to as a Godly biblical example of what is good.
- Wouldn’t we all like to hold ourselves to aspects of this standard?
- Do what is right, trust in God, hold fast, not depart, keep his commandments, prosper.
- We could all hope to hold to half of that for our lives. That we would honor God with our lives.
- The End result of Hezekiah’s tussle with Sennacherib is found in v7-8 a speech to his people.
- 7 “Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid nor dismayed before the king of Assyria, nor before all the multitude that is with him; for there are more with us than with him. 8 With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God, to help us and to fight our battles.”
- Hezekiah has a clear understanding that the only way they are going to win their battle is that God is with them as they go into their battle. It is God’s spirit that accomplishes it.
- “to help us and to fight our battles”. This is a super cheat code. With God’s help, we can do anything. With him, through him, through us, he moves. BY HIS SPIRIT
- Pastor Chris said- How wonderful that God involves us in something that he could do without us to benefit him which in turn benefits us. What a beautiful Thing!
- But how? The verse for the week is Zech 4:6 So he answered and said to me: “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the Lord of hosts.
- Hezekiah shows us a way to walk in this Spirit. Not by our own power, but by HIS power
- Doing it on your own strength is never impressive. God doing it is always very impressive.
- So we do things the God way and we get the God results. Lets trust in God.
1. Pay attention
- If you are not paying attention, you wont even realize that you are under attack.
- You’ve been lulled into a sense of complacency and now you are under attack. You didn’t see it coming, it came from no where. It just grabs you out of no where
- 2 And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come, and that his purpose was to make war against Jerusalem,
- What set Hezekiah up for success was that he was aware of the reality that an attack was coming against him. Sennacherib had a purpose. His purpose was to make war
- John 10:10 says the devil comes to seek, kill and destroy
- 1 peter 5:8 says he walks around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour
- If you are a blood bought child of God, there is a target on your back and chest
- You must pay attention. The devil doesn’t come with a pitch fork. He comes as an angel of Light.
- The only angels of light I see are Movie Screens, TV Screens, Tablet Screens, Phone Screens.
- All light. Comes in through your eyes. Changes how you view the world and others.
- Heb 2:1 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.
- Give all the more earnest heed to the things you have heard- you’ve heard it- Take heed!
- How many times do you relisten to the sermon? How often do you do a personal study through the notes? Its up every week. You can dig in even deeper. Apply it even more. I listen to it!
- You can not be led astray to other things that seek to lead you away from the things of God.
- Proverbs 4:25 Let your eyes look straight ahead, And your eyelids look right before you.
- Make adjustments as you need to keep you from going from the left and right.
- New years eve, we dumped all the sweets from the house. Gonzo. Done. No temptation
2. Don’t do it alone
- I’ve been researching and reading so much about the church. You were created for community
- I have never met a strong Christian who isn’t part of a Church. Not one time.
- I’ve met a lot of self-righteous prideful individuals that lack humility, but no strong ones.
- 3 he consulted with his leaders 4 Thus many people gathered together
- However great King Hezekiah was, he obviously saw that he needed his leaders, commanders and many other people gathered together to fight against the enemy. Not by himself
- Gal 6:2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
- As Christians we are called to be together. We aren’t supposed to fight on our own
- Never understand when people pull back when they are going through it. Go through it here.
- Verbalize to the brethren that you’re going through it. Give others the gift of walking out the scriptures and being able to carry your burdens. Let them pray for you, help, support etc.
- Hezekiah couldn’t do it on his own. He needed to have others by his side to be able to help him.
- Ro 15:1 We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves.
- You remember when our church went through all that stuff back in 2019-2020? I so desperately needed your encouragement and you gave it to me. It sustained me. But what if I left?
- You can’t help if you’re not in the room. That means you have to be in community
- 1 Thes 5:14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all.
- There are times when we are all weak and we need to be upheld. What if you miss your moment? You want someone to be there for you in your time of need, but you wont position yourself in the same way. The church doesn’t work without you here!
- Visting church in AZ- Greet your neighbor time. New people next to us- Greeted!
- Don’t know if they are there, but I did my part that day for the kingdom!
3. Own what you own
- As much as we need other people, and we need the spirit of God, there’s always a personal component to it. Our agency comes in alignment with the Lord.
- You have to get out of bed in the morning. No one else is going to do it for you.
- There is a spiritual reality to a life lived under the protection and guidance of the Holy Spirit, but there is always a human interaction with it. You have to pray, You have to read, You have to reflect, you have to focus, remove the stuff from your life, direct your paths, submit to his will
- 2 chron 32:5 And he strengthened himself
- How exactly, not really laid out in this scripture, but Hezekiah got involved in the process.
- He realized that he was going to go into battle and he girded up his loins and gets ready for it
- Back in sales days. So repetitive and boring. Sucking air in the car before going in.
- What do you do to prepare yourself for the day and a day in the Lord’s house?
- 1 Sam 30:6 David strengthened himself in the Lord.
- Always curious about people that never raise their hands once, never bow the knee once, never fast once, never get drastic with it. Never get involved. “you do it God” instead of “Here I am”
- When I’m here- I maximize the moment. I try to connect with God and receive from him.
- Hebrews 12:12 Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees,
- We need each other, but sometimes you have to find it yourself. No one cares more about you than you. Most people are so self consumed they don’t have time to think about you.
- Be Honest with yourself. Tell yourself what you know to be true. Go from there.
- Apply the word of God to your life. Immediately apply what you hear from God.
4. You have to have a plan
- You cannot walk in the spirit of God without a spiritual plan. No plan is a bad plan.
- Your daily plan is your spiritual plan. If you do not have some sort of plan, chaos is your plan
- I have a daily schedule, weekly schedule, monthly and yearly schedule. I plug in the variables
- It’s not written because it’s my habit. It doesn’t have to be written. I know my big rocks.
- I spend time with God bc I don’t want to lose contact. I workout because I want to stay fit. I protect my sermon prep time because I want to be prepared. I focus on people bc I want a full life. I clean up around me because I don’t want to be distracted. Organized and disciplined
- The truth is that we all have a plan, it just may not be a good one. Be honest with your plan
- Have a plan- Read v 5-6
- Built up the wall that was broken- There are things in your life that are broken. Fix them.
- Built up another wall outside- You need double coverage to walk in the spirit
- The greatest wall you can build up is to not walk in the flesh. Kulibaba did a masterful job
- Galatians 6:8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.
- I worked hard on my lawn last year. A thick fresh lawn is the best way to keep away weeds.
- Put in seeds into the spirit of God! That’s the plan- When you read, pray, fellowship, give, serve, worship you are sowing seeds to the spirit! Make a thick spiritual lawn that can fight
- When you put in seeds to your fleshly desires it will come to fruition!
- No water, no sun, just letting them come to seed. I would walk through every day pulling them.
- Romans 8:13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
5. Trust in God
- To walk with the spirit of God, you need to trust in God.
- 7 “Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid nor dismayed before the king of Assyria, nor before all the multitude that is with him; for there are more with us than with him. 8 With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God, to help us and to fight our battles.” And the people were strengthened by the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.
- Very clear- With him is an arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God.
- So what are we doing to do? Be strong. Not be afraid.
- Walking by the spirit of God comes with a dependence and awareness of him with you
- Most, if not all of us will never go into a battle of biblical proportions. We just wont.
- You’ll have difficult conversations, fights with the flesh, emotional disturbances, physical ailments, financial difficulties, career insecurities and the like
- And if you PRAY and KNOW the Scriptures and LEAN not on your own understanding, you will see God move in the midst of it.
- Real talk- I have prayed and asked the Lord to heal my heart with my father. He did it.
- Psalm 20:6-8 READ I believe and know that verse bc I have seen God move in my life
- Those who never call out, never get rescued. I don’t have large emotional and relational issues bc of my father. I still have issues, but I’m not a failure. I have humbly succeeded w God’s help.
- But if you never do the spiritual work before the Lord to let him heal you, you’ll never get there
- Ephesians 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
- Being strong in the Lord and power of his might is possible!
- It is possible to feel the tangible presence of the Living God. I sense it in the word, worship, sermons, conversations. I know he’s watching over me.
- And every time I feel like I need something from him, I call out to him and he’s there.
- Ro 13:14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.
- Put on the Lord Jesus! Align your life with HIM and make NO provision for the flesh
- Colossians 3:5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth
- Destroy everything about your sinful nature and make no provision for it.
- Your daily prayer should be- Lord, help me walk by your spirit.
- If things don’t look right, feel right, aren’t going right, seem impossible
- Lord, Help me walk by your spirit.
