- Title: Indeed More Than Enough Text: Exodus 35:30–36:7
God appoints and equips Bezalel and Oholiab with skill to lead the construction of the tabernacle. Spirit-filled artisans join the work, and the people bring freewill offerings daily. Their generosity becomes so abundant that Moses commands them to stop giving, because there is indeed more than enough to complete the work. - they spoke to Moses, saying, “The people bring much more than enough for the service of the work which the Lord commanded us to do.”…. And the people were restrained from bringing, 7 for the material they had was sufficient for all the work to be done—indeed too much.
- I remember many years ago when we had to replace the sewer line behind the house
- Put out the call- “need a few guys”. About 25-30 guys showed up with shovels
- Here was the problem- Billy came down early and dug the whole thing.
- The people came ready to give, and it was more than enough. Had to be restrained
- That’s how we roll around here. Seems there’s always more than we need for everything
- This message isn’t about correcting a problem -it’s about declaring who we are. Faith and Victory is a generous church. You give. You serve. You step up. This isn’t a push -it’s a celebration of a culture that already exists, with a call to keep it stirred. Kids- we’re generous
- As your pastor I love to hear about discipleship that’s happening, help, money, business help, prayer, caring for kids, helping marriage, People come early and stay late. Selfless giving
- Clean, fix, practice, serve, love, give, tithing and giving is consistent around here.
- We don’t ask for a lot of extra but when we do- it happens! We’re a very generous church!
- the heart of this passage is what describes what happens when God’s people truly respond:
- “The people bring much more than enough for the service of the work which the Lord commanded us to do.” – Exodus 36:5
- That one verse is the blueprint for how generosity moves through God’s people:
- The People Bring – We have to be involved
- For the Service of the Work – It’s all for Him
- Which the Lord Commanded Us – God calls us to it
- Indeed Too Much – Abundance is the result
- But before we unpack that, let’s define what we mean by generosity.
- Generosity Begins Where Obligation Ends- Doing what is expected of you isn’t generosity.
- Biblical generosity isn’t about doing the minimum—it’s about doing more. Above and beyond
- It perks my ears when I hear people call tithing generosity. I get it- its because people want a emotional win for their giving, so people frame it as generosity instead of faithfulness.
- Generosity (noun): the quality of being kind, selfless, and willing to give money, time, or other resources freely—especially more than is strictly necessary or expected.
- Tithing is obedience.- we are supposed to tithe. (still curious about non-tithers)
- Serving is responsibility. We’re all supposed to serve somewhere in the church.
- Generosity is overflow—giving more than required because your heart is stirred.
- Matthew 5:41 – Go the second mile Proverbs 11:24–25 – The generous soul will be made rich
- All throughout Scripture, we see this “more than enough” generosity. The widow of Zarephath gave her last meal and God made it never run out 1 Ki 17. David gave from his own treasure and the leaders followed, more than enough for the temple 1 Chr 29. The Macedonians gave beyond their ability with joy 2 Cor 8. Mary broke the alabaster jar, beautiful to Jesus though others called it waste Mk 14. A boy gave his lunch, Jesus fed 5,000 and had 12 baskets left Jn 6. The early church shared so fully that no one lacked anything Ac 4. And God Himself gives exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think Eph 3:20.
- This is the kind of spirit we see in Exodus—and it’s what we already see in our church.
- The People Bring – We Have to Be Involved
- Exodus 35:30–35 shows us that God called individuals by name—Bezalel and Aholiab—to lead the building of the tabernacle.
- Bezalel means “in the shadow of God”—covered, empowered, protected.
- Aholiab means “tent of the Father”—a name literally tied to God’s dwelling place.
- Together: the protected ones of God are building a dwelling place for the Father.
- This isn’t just about them it’s a pattern throughout Scripture. God calls people by name.
He called Moses from a bush (Ex 3), Samuel in the night (1 Sam 3), Jeremiah before birth (Jer 1).
He called Mary by name at the tomb (Jn 20), Zacchaeus from the tree (Lk 19), and in Exodus, He called Bezalel and Aholiab for a specific assignment. - God doesn’t use people generically He knows your name, and He has something for you
- Jesus said “even the hairs of your head are numbered.” He knows you. Specifically.
- Just like in Exodus, you have something to bring: skill, time, energy, story, background, gifting.
- Do you know how to find your gift? It’s easy and you love it. Not work. (music, serving, working)
- Your life is not random it’s a custom tool in God’s hand. And you are to answer this call
- Ja 1:17 every good/ perfect gift comes from Him. 1 Pe 4:10 use those gifts to serve one another.
- So how do you stay involved in the work?
- Inventory your gifts – You have something from God.
- Look for opportunities – Church and life are full of them.
- Fight the flesh – Laziness, apathy, and selfishness stunt your gifts.
- Praise God for your gifts – We weren’t meant to all bring the same thing.
- This church is full of people who bring. You hear. You respond. You show up with your shovel.
- It’s like this: who gets invited to dinner and doesn’t ask what to bring? Who hears their name called and ignores it?
- I remember in the Army, formation was alphabetical. I knew when my name was coming. I ignored it in rebellion as a power play. LAST FOUR- YOU KNOW ITS YOUR NAME
- Some people do that spiritually. “That’s not how you say my name.” “Probably someone else.” “Someone else can.”. If there’s a need- don’t ignore the HS- answer the call. Do it.
- But listen God provides, but we must bring. Don’t underestimate what’s in your hands.
- Romans 12:6 says we all have different gifts—use them.1 Corinthians 12:18 says God placed each member exactly where He wanted.
- This church is strong because the people here have heard the call—and answered it.
- For the Service of the Work – It’s All for Him
- Ex 36:1–2 whom the Lord has put wisdom and understanding, to know how to do all manner of work……. in whose heart the Lord had put wisdom, everyone whose heart was stirred,
- The work wasn’t for Moses, it wasn’t for status—it was for the Lord.
- This is very important distinction when it comes to generosity. The generous heart is stirred because of what GOD has done. God puts wisdom, understanding, work, heart etc.
- When David was building the temple he said this-
- 1 Chronicles 29:14 But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly as this? For all things come from You, and of Your own we have given You.
- David’s heart for God was so strong he couldn’t NOT be generous with the Lord
- 29:3 Moreover, because I have set my affection on the house of my God, I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house, my own special treasure of gold and silver:
- David loved God Ps 96:7-9 Give to the Lord, O families of the peoples, give to the Lord glory and strength. Give to the Lord the glory due His name; bring an offering, and come into His courts.
- These stories that we read from the bible inspire us because these people were so sacrificial
- To continue in generosity- we must maintain that its all for him and it will never be enough
- Relationships that have no abundance or above and beyond feel transactional. Devalued
- My dad was like this. I can’t remember a time he was generous. It always felt forced.
- He’d always have an angle and wanted my brother or I to ‘chip in’ on gifts. Totally weird.
- Throughout our kids lives, even when they were young, every so often we’d get a financial blessing. I’d peel off a 100 and give it to my kids. I needed it. But I wanted to be outlandish
- It doesn’t have to be money. I’m not a creative gift giver. That’s just what I do.
- Ro 11:36 For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever.
- Everything I have, we have is from the Lord. How can we not do it for him? How not?
- We’ve been generous here. Missions, helping churches, people, bc its for HIM
- 2 Corinthians 9:7 So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.
- The principles of God have been and will always be the same. God loves a cheerful giver.
- In the exodus story Their hearts were stirred because they knew who they were serving.
- Churches encourage obedience in the tithe. Its expected. But the stingy spirit comes in when you forget who you are giving it to and why you’re giving it to him. (same w time, energy etc)
- God will often tell me to clean out my wallet. I always carry at least 200-500 bucks in my wallet
- Many people don’t carry cash. I do. I want to be able to be obedient immediately.
- I cant bless someone I meet, or give in a service if I never carry no cash. (don’t even get credit)
- We serve for Him. We give for Him. Our work is worship. When it’s for God, there’s no such thing as “too much.”. Generosity is for the one who saved us, placed us, loves us, watches over
- Which the Lord Commanded Us – God Commands Us to Give
- Exodus 36:3–5 5 and they spoke to Moses, saying, “The people bring much more than enough for the service of the work which the Lord commanded us to do.”
- This wasn’t a man-made campaign—it was a divine command.
- Obedience was the foundation, generosity was the overflow. God was commanding, but more
- Deu 10:12 what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Jos 24:14 therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth 1 Sa 12:24 Only fear the Lord, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you. Ma 4:10 worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve
- Generosity isn’t just a suggestion. God commands us to be a part of His work. And we obey not begrudgingly, but joyfully. We love to follow the commands of God because we love him!
- We’re generous here because we’re obedient here. Worship, disciple, love, forgive all command
- And when it comes to being obedient to God- he demands an all or nothing walk with him
- And that means he’s entitled to every last part of who I am 100 percent of the time.
- I tried to read this book many years ago that has been moving around churches.
- I wont tell you the book- it was about having ‘balance’ in serving God. Not too much.
- I threw It away. Following Jesus is a crucifying dying emptying denying existence. Commands it!
- And when he says everything always I believe it. I can’t outgive God. I can’t be generous enough
- Be aware of disobedience. Watch out for a miserly spirit. It comes up!
- Whenever I feel that miserly spirit come up I give/serve more. I don’t want to be that way.
- Indeed Too Much – God Produces Abundance Through Us
- I love this part of the story- The giving was through the people and it produced ABUNDANCE
- Exodus 36:6–7 The giving was so much, Moses had to tell them to stop.
- When people are stirred, equipped, and willing, there’s more than enough.
- That’s where our church has always been. People are crazy generous so we always have what we need. (we never had an extra offering for bills, wed offering, ask not to)
- Malachi 3:10 – Pour out a blessing—more than you can contain
- That’s only possible through obedience and generosity.
- This is already happening here. we’re a “more than enough” people. Let’s keep bringing, keep building, and keep overflowing.
- John 10:10 I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
- 2 Cor 9:8, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. Psalm 23:5my cup runs over. Ephesians 3:20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.
- Abundance should be the norm of Christians in all areas. Not just money
- We don’t just give money. We give of ourselves- when you stay to pray and talk to someone
- We give of our time– when you help someone during the week. Invite people over.
- A rising tide helps all ships. Whatever intellectual capital, energy, or know how is for HIM
- Proverbs 11 The generous soul will be made rich. You can’t be too generous.
- We all love it when someone is generous with us. We should be equally generous.
- So here’s the call, church: let’s never stop bringing.
- God stirred the hearts of His people in Exodus and they responded with so much passion, so much sacrifice, so much generosity—that Moses literally had to tell them to stop. The work was complete. The resources were overflowing. There was indeed more than enough.
- That’s not just a story it’s a picture of who we are. Faith and Victory Church is a “more than enough” church. You give. You serve. You show up. And I believe with all my heart: if we keep this spirit stirred, there will never be a need we can’t meet, a vision we can’t build, a soul we can’t reach, a disciple we can’t raise.
- Why? Because the people bring. Because it’s all for Him. Because He commands it.
And because He produces abundance through us. - So don’t hold back. Keep being the people who show up with shovels even when the trench is already dug. Keep carrying what God put in your hands. Keep saying yes to the Spirit’s stirrings. And watch watch how God takes your “not enough” and turns it into “indeed more than enough.” Psalm 24:1 says, “The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness.”
If He owns it all, and He lives in us—then we ought to live and give like everything is possible. - Let’s keep bringing.
Let’s keep building.
Let’s keep overflowing.
