The Big Day
- There’s been a lot of important days in History. Ends of wars. Passing of laws. Establishment of countries. Discoveries of science. Inventions of medicines, machines and therapies.
- What’s been the most important days in your life?
- Mine- Birthday. First day driving w license. Graduations. Meeting wife. Having Kids. Joining and getting out of army. Coming home from deployments. Biggest- Aug 10 1990. Day I got saved
- Do you know what the most important day is in History? TODAY! Resurrection day!
- Commonly referred to as Easter. The day we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus!
- Jesus came to this earth as God in the flesh. Lived and directed us, and then was crucified and killed, and then 3 days later came back from the dead as a resurrected Savior for our sins.
- Because of who Christ was, and what he did, we can be transformed to live a victorious life over sin and live eternally with him
- This is the big day!
1. It’s the big day because its of first importance
- 1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
- I actually like the ESV translation- 1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,
- This day of resurrection is the at the forefront of what we believe and practice as Christian people. There is no day more important in the history of the world
- There is no other day that is more significant because it is the central belief from which all other beliefs rest on. The whole point of the Bible story is that Jesus Christ came to save sinners.
- We, as Christian people believe that we are forgiven from our sins, so we can overcome sin in this life, and live eternally in Heaven with Jesus. By Jesus we can be changed in this life!
- 1 Cor 15:17 – “And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins!”
- If the resurrection didn’t happen, we are still in our sins and we are not saved from Hell
- This is why Paul said that this day is of the most importance. There’s nothing more important. There’s nothing more important that you need to focus on and remember and take in.
- Christians can get so caught up in different theologies and beliefs that become their focus in their relationship with God and others. It can cloud the whole thing. You’ve missed Christ
- It causes divisions and can pull you away from what is most important. Go back to the Cross
- Do not lose sight of what is the MOST important.
- Friend who went on hike. Park bikes at the end so they only go one way.
- This is a 20 mile trek with 6000 ft of elevation gain. Most people hike and camp and do it over 4 days. These guys ran it in 8 hours. Epic trip of all trips. Run it and ride bikes downhill back.
- Don’t forget keys. Pretty much the only thing you need to remember. Don’t forget the keys.
- Do you know what the key is to your Christian life?
- 1 Cor 2:2 For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.- YOU MUST KNOW JESUS AND KNOWING HIM is the Death burial and ressurection
- Why do you allow yourself to get pulled in so many different directions?
- So many things of your life will make more sense and give you more spiritual stability if you keep the most important thing the most important thing.
- It gives you more peace, makes you more forgiving, worry less, worship more.
- When something tries to pull you in another direction- Stay at the cross.
- 2 Corinthians 5:15 – “and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.”
- You’ll find more meaning in your life by reflecting more on the resurrection of Jesus
2. It’s the big Day because it shows we’re loved
- Being loved is a wonderful thing unless you’ve got issues in your head. Most people appreciate being loved. Some parents have messed this up for their kids.
- We loved our kids growing up and I felt loved growing up. My salvation experience wasn’t that I realized how much God loved me that I wanted to love him back.
- Ro 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
- It wasn’t a feeling of wanting to be loved, needing to be loved that drew me-
- It was truth of the resurrection and the costliness of it that pricked my heart.
- Love that isn’t costly isn’t love. It’s lip service. No one likes people that say they love and wont love you with their actions. It just becomes lip service.
- Playing high school football- dad wouldn’t come and watch bc I didn’t play.
- Graduating from basic training. No one came. Broke formation. Ps Jay 12.5 hrs 750 miles for less than a 24 hour visit. Costly. Demonstrated love. Dedication. Showed love. I should love.
- 1 John 4:9-10 – “In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”
- Us loving God is so secondary. We should love him. Worship him. LOVE HIM
- But the love of God was manifested towards US that he sent Jesus to die for our sins.
- This is why this is the big day! The day that Jesus came to die for our sins. Shows LOVE
- I have a problem with preaching that focuses so much on the value of the individual
- Its common among preachers- You were valuable enough that Jesus came to die for you
- I was at a youth camp years ago where they used a 100 bill as an example- the one who made it determines its value. God made you- so you have value.
- Resonates in the heart of those who want to be validated and feel valued.
- It’s also very American self centered self importance to make everything about you.
- Be wary of any theology that satisfies a sinful desire
- this is where you go sideways- Thinking about YOU instead of HIM and the cross
- Ephesians 2:4-5 – “But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved).”
- Romans 5:7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—
- The story isn’t that you were valuable enough to die for, its that you weren’t valuable enough to die for, but because HE is love and HE loves the unrighteous. Think of THAT power to change
- It’s way different when you realize how worthless you really are, and how bad you’ve really done and THEN you realize that God loves you at your WORST not your BEST
- In the midst of my worst mistakes, my deliberate disobedience, my largest regrets and self satisfying endeavors of the flesh he says- I’ll die for him! Because of MY LOVE
- Lean into it. Let him love you. You’ll probably feel more valuable, that’s ok, but it shouldn’t get you to think about how great you are, but how great HE is
- He died to not just redeem you, but to give you his power to overcome your sins.
3. It’s the big day because it rescues us from this evil world
- When I was a young Christian man, the old people around me would talk about Jesus return and the destruction of the wicked. I was young- I wanted to live! I didn’t want to die. I had lots to do.
- But now that I’m an old man at 49 I understand why they were that way.
- The longer I live the more this world bothers me. It’s the politics, the crime, the lack of common decency, the music and movies, the overly sexualized culture.
- Praise God I’ve got an exit plan- Praise God that I’m rescued right now BC of Christ in me
- Galatians 1:4 – “Who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father.”
- Jesus will rescue me from this evil age soon enough, sometimes not soon enough
- He WILL rescue me and he HAS rescued me. I’m not just holding onto a future hope to be delivered, I experience that deliverance from this evil age RIGHT NOW
- I’m in this world but not of this world. I’m just passing through, but in CHRIST I can have victory over this world. It doesn’t depress me, control me or run my life. THE HOPE OF GLORY
- When you embrace the fullness of the resurrection power, you overcome the world.
- This faith is the victory that overcomes the world- the belief in Jesus as the Christ.
- 1 John 5:4-5 – “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?”
- If you lack victory in your life it may be because you are not appropriating the victory that the resurrection provides.
- How? Reflection, remembrance, focusing. Appropriating- “Calling on you right now Jesus”
- Flipping the van- at least we dumped some debt! Glory! Thank you Lord for your protection
- Pain, misery, destruction, loss, in the grind, overcome with life, “at least I’m saved”
- You have remind yourself of this bedrock truth on a constant basis. Worship, read
- John 16:33 – “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
- He has overcome the world! Live in it and reflect on it! Walk in it!
4. It’s the Big day because it gives us a living hope
- We have 2 hopes- A right now hope and a future hope because of the resurrection.
- I know that I can make it in this world and I know I’m going to a better place eventually
- Romans 6:4 – “Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
- The resurrection gives me newness of life! I am not the person I used to be!
- This newness of life means that your past sins are no longer held against you
- It means that what you have done in your past has now been forgiven by him
- That you can be a new creation that is not held by your past sins
- That you can be born again into new life and no longer be bound by your past
- SO many people want to FIND themselves and their purpose. The plan that God has for their life.
- People want to understand what has happened to them in the past and why they are they way that they are.
- Do you know what Paul wanted to know? The power of the Resurrection.
- Philippians 3:10-11 – “that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.”
- Conformed to this death. Dying to self and experiencing new life.
- 1 Peter 1:3 – “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”
- This living hope is a hope that overcomes all of my sin. Not just my past sin, but gives me the power to overcome the sins of my life.
- This living hope overcomes all the circumstances of my life. I know who I am and WHOSE I am. I can live unto him and experience a faith that gives me a living hope.
- Because I have this living Hope:
- I do not care what politicians are in office
- Psalm 103:19 – “The Lord has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all.”
- I do not care what the gas prices are
- Philippians 4:19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
- I do not care what the economy is doing
- Psalm 34:10 – “The young lions lack and suffer hunger; but those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.”
- I do not care what sickness may come
- Psalm 103:2-3 – “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases.”
- I do not care who hates on me
- Psalm 27:1-2 – “The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked came against me to eat up my flesh, My enemies and foes, They stumbled and fell.”
- I do not care what my family does to me
- Psalm 27:10 When my father and my mother forsake me, Then the Lord will take care of me.
- I do not care what happens in this world
- Galatians 6:14 – “But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.”
